As part of my giving back to Singapore I meet with those people looking for a new role after having been let go or having left a firm in Singapore. So it was great to meet up with Amsyar who is looking for a new role in Singapore after spending 8 amazing years with Alibaba's Lazada. I went through all the parts of LinkedIn that Amsyar needed to focus on to get a new role: - his profile - his content - his outreach Outreach can only happen once a profile has been repositioned to say that they are looking for a new role and what they could do for a company and also after the first couple of posts are up saying what they can do for someone else. Self promotion is key here. Once that is all done including targeting people who are 1st connections and hiring is the easiest way to make headway. Don't ask for a job outright but meet decision makers who can help you either directly or indirectly. So if you're looking for an ecommerce expert in Asia reach out to Amsyar and discuss what he can do for you. I wish Amsyar well. If you have been retrenched I would be happy to meet you at the WooBar at the W in Sentosa to discuss your LinkedIn profile and Personal Branding for free and give you free advice on what you can do to become known to employers for free. We also offer a low cost Job Seeker-Personal Branding Service on LinkedIn which now includes a FREE CV to enable you to get a new role, details here :https://lnkd.in/dqWRi6EZ #linkedin #rockstar #mohawk #founder #entrepreneur #personalbranding #blackmarketing #linkedinmarketing #newjob #retrenched #FREECV

Dear Recruiters/Hiring Managers, After recent layoffs by several companies, including Indonesia's darling Tokopedia, many people impacted will look for new jobs, and the market will once again be oversupplied with talent. While it might be super tempting to lowball them with your current company's best interest in mind (as you should), I wish that we will still practice empathy and look at the bigger picture. At the end of the day, lowballing capable people is the key to high turnover, which leads to high recruitment and replacement costs. Give them a fair chance and a fair offer according to their capabilities, not their situation ✌

👋 A quick update - I realized that adding recruitment as a core service is absolutely necessary for High Five. When I first founded High Five, my vision was solely to build an Employer of Record company. 🤝 But after speaking with customers and prospects, it was clear that they all needed some form of recruitment as a service. The reason why? It's quite obvious now in retrospect. As a founder operating in Indonesia, I’ve recruited hundreds of product and engineer folks in Indonesia over my career. 👀 Scanning over a resume, within seconds, I can immediately tell if a candidate is promising and worth speaking to. But for a hiring manager unfamiliar with Indonesia, candidate resumes must seem like gibberish. The names of local companies, universities, and professional certifications are often unrecognizable 🔴. To address this challenge, we've been working closely with our customers to help them recruit and secure Indonesia’s top tech talent. We go beyond candidate sourcing - we thoroughly screen, interview, and assess candidates based on our customer's specific requirements. The process has been incredibly rewarding as I’ve been able to meet and chat with the most amazing talent: ▪ Outstanding graduates from Indonesia's premier institutions like Universitas Indonesia and Institut Teknologi Bandung. ▪ Overachieving graduates from universities in the USA, UK, Japan, Taiwan, China, and more - many of whom earned full-ride scholarships. ▪ Former employees of Indonesian unicorns and IPO’d companies such as Gojek, Tokopedia, Bukalapak, Traveloka and Xendit (to name just a few). ▪ Highly skilled product, engineering, and data professionals with deep expertise and a commitment to excellence in their respective fields. By expanding our services to include recruitment, High Five is better positioned to meet our customer needs and connect them with Indonesia's brightest minds. ❤️ I’m super excited about this new direction and now seeking ways to streamline and improve our workflows. Am I headed the in the right direction? Is recruiting talent in unfamiliar markets a challenge for you? What is your approach when hiring international talent? I'd love to hear your thoughts, experiences and insights in the comments below! 👇 #entrepreneurship #startups #recruitment #indonesia

Dear Recruiters and Hiring Managers, In light of recent layoffs at several companies, including Indonesia's well-known Tokopedia many talented professionals will be seeking new opportunities. With an influx of available talent, it might be tempting to offer lower salaries in the interest of your company. However, I encourage you to approach this situation with empathy and consider the long-term implications. By providing fair and competitive offers, we ensure that we attract and retain top talent, fostering a more stable and productive workforce. It’s important to look beyond the immediate financial gains and focus on the bigger picture – building a loyal, motivated, and high-performing team. Let's commit to giving these capable professionals the respect and fair compensation they deserve. It will benefit them, our companies, and the broader industry in the long run. ✌

I recently wrapped up my time at Shopee where I had the privilege to Serve, Adapt, Run, Commit and Stay Humble. To summarise my 3 year tenure, I have 3 highlights/learnings: 1/ Spending time to formulate the right strategy is important, but arguably more important is execution. Life at Shopee was dynamic - we needed to act fast to continuously understand our buyers, sellers and competitors to effectively capture changing trends and maintain market leadership. It was okay to only be 80% correct, but it was necessary to have the flexibility to iterate and adjust on the fly to find the winning formula. 2/ Pivoting from full commercial growth into a singular focus on profitability, then reverting back to growth albeit figuring out how to grow sustainably. Working for a publicly listed company is never easy, especially in challenging economic conditions where investors seem to want the best of both worlds. 3/ Managing a team of diverse individuals who were all hungry to learn - learning how to shift from just ‘doing the work’ to leading with clarity and empathy. Looking forward, I will take a short break to settle back into Melbourne life and rhythm (it's been a cold and windy first week back!) before I look for opportunities to apply these experiences and learnings to the Australian market. If anybody within my network knows of any opportunities for an ex strategy consultant with e-comm/retail industry experience, I'd love to connect and chat further!

Last week marked my last working day at the biggest e-commerce platform in SouthEast Asia. I was (and still am) filled with immense gratitude and pride especially to trailblaze Shopee Indonesia Research & Insight Team. The team is lean in size, but it’s mighty (you know who you are and you all should be proud of yourself). It was of course require a lot of hard work, but for me it was a really fun ride. Definitely is a five-year worth remember and reflect for the rest of my life. When I was in Shopee, I observe that the mindset of the people is really what sets them apart. They play to win. They are problem hunters and solvers at the same time and they do it well. Their drive is bigger than their fear. I am honored to ever be part of it, for all the lessons, it was all are invaluable in shaping my experience and career trajectory. A little back story from me, this is actually a living-in-the-dream moment. A few years before I started working for the company, I told one of my acquaintances that I was dreaming of working as a market researcher for a big tech company in Indonesia (no specific company in mind at that time), I simply just thought it will be fun. My acquaintance at that time negated that, said that big tech usually only has research team at the headquarters (which most of it not in Indonesia at that time), chances were slim. Long story short, a very valuable lesson learned here: never underestimate your own dream even when no one believes in it. Have a really good relationship with yourself and trust yourself. And as a Muslim, I can only thank Allah for writing this plan for me. This is not possible without His decree. The only way to go is up, Shopee! 📈 === As life stage changes, priorities shift. I am here to also announce that I will be working solo for awhile as I need time flexibility for myself and my family at the moment. Those who have the needs to collaborate for market research projects (as a consultant/moderator/analyst), is more than welcomed to slide me a message to enquire. Big chunk of my experience is definitely in business research, but I also done public policy-related topics such as energy-related research, macroeconomy in general, and community/reforestation issue. ❤️
