How to solve the ‘feature- user-value' problem? Which features to include in the product? In my last post (http://bit.ly/4fq4OcV), I talked about the need to adopt a ‘feature- user value system’ to solve for me-too type standardized features. Here’s a guide for product owners - To determine if features are useful and which ones to prioritize, plot features against user values. Provide a numeric value to each of the user values. You should get a scatter map, something like in the figure below. - Prioritize: Continue to support and enhance these features as they are well-received by users. - Investigate: Explore why these features are highly valued despite their low count and consider expanding or improving them. - Improve: These features are numerous but not valued by users, so consider improving their functionality or reducing their presence. - Discontinue: These features are not valued by users and are not prominent, so consider discontinuing or completely reworking them. What challenges do you face when trying to align features with user values, and how have you addressed them?

ever been excited about a new product update, only to find it cluttered with unnecessary features? that's feature bloat. <---------- quick highlights 1. what is feature bloat?: it’s when new features are added without considering their impact on user experience. 2. why does it happen?: driven by competition, customer demands, and internal pressures. 3. the dark side of feature bloat: more features can dilute your product’s core value, leading to complexity, performance issues, and user frustration. quick takeaways 1. prioritize core functionality: focus on what makes your product unique and valuable. 2. listen to user feedback selectively: not every request needs to be implemented; focus on those that enhance the core experience. 3. keep it simple: ensure new features are intuitive and enhance the user experience without adding unnecessary complexity. how do you manage feature bloat in your product development process? share your tips in the comments! #ProductDevelopment #FeatureBloat #UserExperience #LeanProduct want to learn more about effective product development strategies? subscribe to ops crux on substack for weekly newsletters and exclusive content.

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁'𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 I'm a research nerd. From behavioural stuff to attitudinal, qualitative or quantitative, I'm fascinated by it. Understanding how your customer ticks creates a feedback loop that continuously improves your product and your understanding. In 2024 you don't really have too many excuses for not understanding a customer. The costs are low, the technology is available and the frameworks have been stress tested and improved. You don't need a fancy double diamond 💎 approach though, something as simple as setting up a call to chat to your customers, or digesting what comes in to customer service can give you great insights. Product managers that feel like they don't have a handle on what's going on with their customers: - set up Microsoft Clarity for heatmaps and sessions recordings (cost: FREE) - run a couple of sessions with Userbrain (cost of first two sessions: FREE) - set up a couple of interviews with your biggest fans to understand their jobs to be done with your product (cost: FREE and a couple of coupons for your product) With all of those savings you might as well pay some money to someone like me 😋 to mine the insights you're getting out of it and help you shape your roadmap.

"Don’t start with product, features, ideas, or hypotheses. Start with a good understanding of target audiences’ tasks, experiences, and pain points. Be solution-agnostic early in your process." Really enjoyed reading this article challenging the existing product dilemma between development and customer experience: At the end of the day, a product will not exist/survive if it does not serve customer needs. So there is clearly a prioritization in the process rather than merely "introduce five new features", or "UAT by Friday"- to try winning the jackpot. "Building the right products" should always be tackled prior to "building the product right."

unpopular opinion in product management - when doing user research, instead of giving multiple choices, ask for text answers. You will get low but quality responses. Majority of time mcq are added not for customer's convenience but researcher's convenience. #user_research #product_management

In product, it’s essential to test our assumptions. But you can’t test everything. And you can’t test what you’re unaware of. I couldn't find a single assumption prioritization canvas that would: - Focus specifically on prioritizing assumptions - Allow you to use value, usability, viability, and feasibility risks - Work for both Initial and Continuous Product Discovery - Be easy to integrate with RICE/ICE and similar frameworks - Avoid ambiguous labels on the axes So I created a free Assumption Prioritization Canvas. How to use it? - The entire Product Trio must work together - Start with a clear objective, either in pursuit of the Product-Market Fit or a meaningful problem to solve with clear desired outcomes - Explore the problem space (e.g., interviews, data analytics, market research) - Define your knowledge about the specific problems you want to tackle - Ideate on how you can solve those problems and prioritize those ideas - Identify assumptions related to value, usability, viability, and feasibility risks - For a new product, consider the go-to-market risk as a separate category - Focus on testing the riskiest assumption first. As a rule of thumb, conduct 1-2 experiments at a time. Learn from it and repeat. Once there are no more assumptions to test, you can select an idea for implementation - Product Discovery results in a validated product backlog. A free template (Google Drive; use File > Download): https://lnkd.in/dR6BdawZ And in my new free post: - Traditional assumptions mapping techniques and my thoughts - The Assumption Prioritization Canvas in depth - Proven techniques to identify hidden assumptions - Prioritizing assumptions vs. Product Discovery No paywall: https://lnkd.in/dc83WmH3
