🌍 Founder Story: Creating Impact Through Community Action 🌍 In 2015, I founded the Pier2Pier Beach Clean with a simple idea: combine environmental action with fun. Over the next five years, we introduced thousands of people to litter picking through our Silent Disco Beach Cleans in Brighton & Hove. Every month, hundreds of locals and tourists joined us to clean the beach while dancing together—a perfect mix of joy, community, and environmental responsibility. 🌊🎧✨ One of our proudest moments came in 2019 when we organized the Brighton Pride Silent Disco Beach Clean. After the parade, over 500 volunteers cleared 2 tonnes of rubbish from the beach, dancing every step of the way. It was a powerful reminder that collective action, when made joyful and inclusive, can truly make a difference. 🏳️🌈💪 Through this initiative, we had the support of companies like Lush and Lucy & Yak, received media coverage from BBC, VICE, and Huffington Post, and hosted corporate away days with organizations like Sky, Unilever, and DHL. We even launched a city-wide campaign to reduce littering, which was sponsored by Lush. This work earned us a nomination for the Keep Britain Tidy Litter Hero Award. 🏅♻️ I was inspired by the #2minutebeachclean movement and wanted to find a way to make environmental action something people would look forward to. By blending purpose with play, we created something that sparked real change in the community—and had fun doing it. What started as a small idea turned into a movement that helped raise awareness around environmental stewardship, created lasting memories for participants, and fostered deep connections within the community. "The idea of enhancing health, wellness and productivity by connecting #nature to the #BuiltEnvironment has begun gaining traction across the globe. The concept is called #BiophilicDesign and is being pioneered in select innovative communities worldwide. "Perhaps the most notable is Serenbe, an award-winning biophilic village that brings people close to nature and one another. Situated in the Chattahoochee Hills region southwest of Atlanta, the 1,000-acre community is home to hundreds of people whose residences are spread across four different hamlets. "Only 30% of the land in this 'urban village' is slated for development, the rest destinated to remain untouched. A 25-acre organic farm provides fresh food, sold at a seasonal Saturday farmers’ market. The community also prioritizes art and culture, hosting regional theater, film series, culinary workshops, music events and more. "Steve Nygren, the founder of Serenbe, reports there are a number of lessons that communities seeking to be #biophilic can learn from the settlement he established. 'You have to look at your land plan and ask yourself how you are going to connect nature and individuals,' he says. 'You start from that as a basis. How do I respect nature? That will lead you to the #environment, storm water, protecting our natural resources. Asking how to protect human health will lead you to walking, access to healthy food, and non-chemical atmosphere on your lawn. It’s like an onion, it’s all connected. If you look at human health and the health of the planet, it’s all connected.'" It's been fantastic to be involved in preparing the HGGT Stewardship Charter over the past couple of years and to now see it adopted and published. Stewardship is too often left until the end of the planning process but it really is essential to so many design decisions that it deserves consideration at just about every stage of planning. We should always be thinking - Who will look after this asset? How will its upkeep be funded? Could it be located/designed differently to reduce future maintenance liabilities? Should the new community play a role in managing it? Ultimately, if we get stewardship right then new developments don't just age well, they also create a positive and thriving legacy.

Great news! Yesterday, as part of our commitment to being environmentally responsible, we celebrated Earth Day by planting eight trees outside our facilities. We are dedicated to achieving our Sustainable Development Goals and taking steps towards a greener future. In the upcoming weeks, we will be planting seeds in our community garden and adding two more planters! However, we won't be able to put gardens outside of the Bloomingdale location as there is no outside water hookup. But don't worry as we'll split the harvest evenly between both buildings. Additionally, we'll be revamping our pollinator garden to help the bee population and encourage cross-pollination. Happy Earth Day! THE ROOT OF THE ISSUE Strength in numbers. During a dinner conversation, friends Butch Whitfield, a realtor at Harry Norman Realtors; Liz Lapidus, founder of Liz Lapidus Strategic Communications; and Johanna Ellis-Reisinger, former owner of Atlanta Classic Cars began discussing their favorite nonprofits and how to enhance their impact. “Our goal was to develop a shared vision to guide the region’s conservation efforts,” says Whitfield. The result was Root Local that began with polling 250 environmental groups to test their interest. “We got responses from all the six sectors we identified: food systems, air and water quality management, canopy and land management, green buildings and practices, sustainable fashion and products, and travel and transportation,” says Whitfield. Using those replies, they developed a Network Map, a Collective Impact Plan and The Pollinator Network where online community members and organizations can come together to share ideas and learn how to become better stewards of the environment. “Interested citizens can register online and choose the sector that interests them most, whether its green buildings or sustainable fashion,” Whitfield says.
