We made some modifications on a hotwell for one of the companies participating in our Sustainable Cost Reduction programme. These involved how condensate is returned, how make-up water is introduced, appropriate sizing of the hotwell to suit steam system capacity, level control and ensuring sufficient available net positive suction head. The results were pleasing in terms of boiler fuel savings, and to a lesser extent water savings resulting from flash steam recovery. We'll be taking a similar approach with a site on our Virtual Energy Manager Programme, with this project due to start next week. The solution we use is not as effective as a vent condenser, which we have implemented for customers in the past, but comes at a much lower capital cost, leading to a better payback. Vent condensers have become expensive over the last few years. There is a place for them though. Going forward, we will be implementing solutions such as these through a new technology company we are setting up. I'll tell you more about this once the business has been formalised. Improve Boiler Efficiency by Increasing Condensate Recovery Rate Using MEASUR TOOL Recovery of maximum amount of energy and material is an specific target in industries, we have developed a simple model using MEASURE TOOL to calculate what are the savings we can acchieve by increasing condensate recovery rate in a boiler system. The condensate recovery rate of a boiler is the percentage of condensate returned to the boiler from the steam system after it has transferred heat and undergone phase change. Improving boiler efficiency by increasing condensate is a must and should be encouraged to achieve commercial targets of industries. Congratulations to Kohler Co. on its impressive efforts toward decarbonization! The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) has awarded the Kohler Co. Vikrell Electric Boiler & Microgrid System project with more than $588,000 (of the total project federal cost share of up to $51.2 million) to begin Phase 1 activities to demonstrate commercial- scale decarbonization solutions to help move energy-intensive industries toward net-zero. Selected as one of 33 projects in the U.S., the funding will be matched by Kohler investment to support the Electric Boiler & Microgrid project at its manufacturing site in Casa Grande, Arizona. The project plans to install electric boilers and a microgrid consisting of a 21 MW solar array and a 20.5 MW battery energy storage system to lower carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by an estimated 7,865 metric tons per year, reducing at least 75% and up to 90% of the pressing process CO₂ emissions from natural gas boilers on site.
