We are so proud of Michelle Edwards, SVP, Talent, Heartbeat leading a workshop today for COOP about "Don't Be Typical. Be a Game Changer." She inspired them to ask for what they need and use their power for good to make a positive impact throughout their career. It was an empowering session to unlock their potential and to be a catalyst to inspire others to show up as their best self.

Do Gen Z know enough about career paths in the creative industries? 🧐
The simple answer is no - because the industry isn't doing enough to teach them! Especially when it comes to the entry level roles that are available.
How are young people supposed to navigate the beginning of their careers if organisations are still keeping that information hidden?
Luckily things are beginning to change and there are more and more resources coming onto the ERIC app every single day that give Gen Z the information they need to start their creative journeys.
A video sparked my interest that shared thoughts and advice on the changes to career development that has been displayed in recent years, by Helen Tupper and Sarah Ellis (Authors of ‘The Squiggly Career’). Traditional ways of career development or progression has been a ladder-like image, driven by job titles that stepped up along the way with experience and increasing responsibilities. However, with newer generations bringing a different perspective into the workplace, there has been a shift toward lateral movement in career paths or, as referred to by Tupper & Ellis (2021), a squiggly path.
These are career paths that change fields or roles, not particularly moving in a stepped manner. This creates an opportunity for individuals to learn more about their talents and where it might be a better fit, as well as their passions to identify jobs that may be more fulfilling than their initial trajectory.
We play the most important role in driving our career development, along with colleagues, mentors and employers. I believe that this new perspective on career paths provides endless opportunities, encourages creativity and creates a broader understanding. I would like to see more companies embrace this, such as through role rotation or job shadowing, allowing employees to take risks in their careers within an organisation. This leads to employees using their talents more effectively, encourages skills sharing and expands employee knowledge on different facets of the business, positively impacting the organisation.
With newer possibilities and changing the way we view career development, what does career development look like for you?

If you are tired of how things are going in your career, for example, you might tend to focus on WHAT you are going to do about it and less on HOW you are doing it.
This week, I am encouraging young people to focus on the What and How as they think of changes they hope to make in their careers.

One of the questions I got from my college audience last week was,
“I’m starting a new job after graduation, how do I keep from being intimidated by my more experienced coworkers?” 🫣
It's simple, have a conversation with them! 👥💬
Show interest in their life, ask how long they have been with the company, how they ended up in their field, where they went to college, and what they studied.
Build a connection with them and watch all those feelings of intimidation disappear. 🤝🌟

Today is #SocialMobilityDay. To be honest, I've not done loads, and that's okay! You don't have to make grand gestures to make a difference, sometimes that difference can be a difference of one.
I've checked in on a couple of #NextGenLeaders teams and talked about plans for next year. Our projects focus on areas of low social mobility and use the #SDGs, project-based learning, and business engagement to help communities - whatever our #Changemakers say their community is and this feeds in perfectly to social mobility 😍
I then popped over to Outwood Academy Freeston, Normanton for the afternoon to help with their year 10 careers interviews. I was blown away by how well prepared the students were, they all shook my hand and presented me with their CV before even sitting down - they were fabulous 🤩
