🚨Pro tip🚨 To enhance healthcare experiences, providers should utilize four key communication tools to empower patients and ensure they feel supported: - Open-ended questions allow patients to voice their main concerns. - Clarifying questions demonstrate the provider's commitment to understanding the specifics. - Affirmations recognize the patient's health progress and milestones, regardless of size. - Summarization statements offer updates on the situation and maintain the patient's engagement in their care story. Starting with an open-ended question and proceeding with clarifying questions establishes a strong connection. Affirmations play a vital role in acknowledging achievements, while summarization statements help in outlining the current status and future steps. By incorporating these techniques, providers can assist patients in feeling valued and empowered throughout their health journey.

I watched this Ted talk recently about the importance of human connection in healthcare, and I found it to be a great reminder. The video points out that in one study, 39% of people had such an interaction with their provider that it led them to change providers. 73% left the office feeling rushed after their appointment. Patients who feel a connection with their provider are shown to have better treatment outcomes, among other positive outcomes. As the video also points out, the system encourages providers to be task-oriented, as opposed to patient-oriented. I challenge everyone in healthcare to think about your part in the system and how you can make a difference in encouraging a patient-oriented environment. Not only that, but how can you provide a family centered environment? We all play a part in communication with the individuals we serve and their families. How can we work on rebuilding trust with patients? By focusing on the human connection, at all times, by all people in the healthcare system.

IPHCC has piloted this initiative to support meaningful change in Ontario's healthcare system: the Safespace Network. This platform provides a safe and anonymous way for individuals to report experiences of racism and harm within the healthcare sector. By addressing the barriers to reporting, the Safespace Network aims to amplify voices and identify systemic issues that impact the quality of care and patient safety. The Safespace Network is an encrypted and anonymous platform where anyone—whether they have experienced harm or witnessed it—can share their experiences without fear of retaliation. By supporting the collection of experiences, the Network helps to identify patterns and trends within healthcare, empowering institutions to prevent negative experiences and work towards meaningful change. There are three ways to report into the platform: 1. A secured hotline: 1-416-477-4627 2. A secured email: report@safespacenetworks.com 3. Online: https://lnkd.in/gJ5pCK8K
