It was a very enlightening session at the DEAL Fellowship session this afternoon, participating in a lecture on “Implementation Research in Public Health", delivered by Dr. Olayinka Obanewa, Head of Special Duties at the FCTA Health Service and Environment Secretariat.
He delved into critical areas of Implementation Research in public health, from general definition (in simple terms), to categories of theories/models/frameworks used in implementation research, methodology, outcomes, and importance of Implementation Research; including how implementation research can be leveraged for evidence-based practice in public health to maximize impact of interventions. While this is not a totally new topic for me, it was good to gain new insights into many grey areas.
Here are my key takeaways from the session:
- Implementation research focuses on understanding how to effectively implement and scale up evidence-based interventions, programs, or policies in real-world settings.
- It aims to identify the most effective strategies for overcoming barriers to implementation and ensuring that interventions are delivered as intended.
- It aims to bridge the gap between research and practice to improve the quality and effectiveness of health services.
- It is a transdisciplinary venture and a convergence of different research perspectives. It involves economics, policy, organizational researchers, anthropologists, social workers, and most importantly the communities.
- Benefits of Implementation research include:
o Enhance effectiveness of interventions
o Increased efficiency in delivery of services
o Enhanced scalability and sustainability of interventions
o Better understanding of context-specific factors influencing implementation
o Provide opportunity for stakeholder engagement
o More effective use of resources
- Desired outcomes in Implementation research include:
o Implementation Outcomes: like acceptability, adoption, appropriateness, feasibility, fidelity, costs, penetration and sustainability
o Service outcomes: Efficiency, effectiveness, safety, equity, patient centeredness, timeliness
o Patient Outcome: Patient satisfaction, Health status/symptoms
Thanks @Dr. Olayinka Obanewa for the insightful session.
