Iowa basketball star Hannah Stuelke champions mental health initiatives at CRCSD - significant step forward in our commitment to addressing student mental health Integrating Hazel Health’s services will ensure that students receive timely mental health care, which is crucial for their academic and personal success. Research from Attendance Works shows that school-based telehealth can reduce chronic absenteeism by 2.5 percentage points and increase participation in math and reading tests by up to 2%. These improvements demonstrate how accessible mental health services positively impact both attendance and academic achievement. This initiative is a key component of our ‘Barriers Down, Achievement Up’ strategy. By removing barriers to mental health care, we are directly supporting our goal of enhancing student achievement. This aligns with our core values: ensuring everyone is equipped with necessary resources, empowered to seek help, and engaged in a supportive environment to excel. Columbia State was recently awarded a $50,000 Student Engagement, Retention and Success (SERS) grant from the Tennessee Board of Regents to fund a comprehensive mental health endeavor, “Well-Being Initiative: Cultivating Mental Wellness at Columbia State.” The project aims to address mental health barriers for Columbia State students through a multifaceted approach. It will expand access to mental health services for students by providing vouchers for psychiatric appointments and medication management; offer workshops on stress management, ADHD, social skills, and music therapy; and provide students additional self-care resources and tools. These initiatives will provide students with increased resources for managing mental health challenges. Efforts to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and promote awareness of available support services will encourage more students to seek help. By fostering a supportive campus culture and equipping students with coping skills and resources, the project seeks to create an environment where all students can thrive academically and personally. “According to the U.S. Department of Education (2022), approximately 27% of all Utah students are chronically absent from school and students with disabilities are 36% more likely to be chronically absent than their peers without a disability (SY2022 data). With many children struggling to attend school regularly, this can hurt their learning, friendships, and future opportunities. SAPs include issues like missing a lot of school (chronic absenteeism), skipping school without permission (truancy), or avoiding school because of anxiety or depression (school refusal). Many factors, such as mental or physical health challenges, bullying, family stress, or issues with school safety can impact school attendance. Big life changes, like moving or switching schools, can make things worse. It’s important to address these problems early to avoid long-term effects like dropping out or missing out on opportunities. How Parents Can Help Parents can help by talking to their children to understand why they don’t want to go to school and working with teachers or counselors to solve problems. Setting up consistent bedtime and morning routines can make school attendance easier. If there are bigger issues like bullying, anxiety, or family challenges, parents can reach out to school staff or community resources for support. Following a successful pilot phase at 15 school districts within 14 states, this multi-year partnership will help pre-K-12 school systems and their leaders make long-term, measurable improvements for students. 3 Biological Factors Contributing to OCD in Youth: Implications for School-Based Interventions Understanding the biological factors of OCD is necessary for developing tailored interventions in the educational setting (see personal page). School professionals are often the front line in identifying when a youth is experiencing a mental health crisis. School-based mental health professionals can utilize this information. 1. ADVOCATE for early screening and identification of at-risk students by collaborating with school administrators and health care providers. 2. IMPLEMENT routine screenings or assessments to identify students who may be exhibiting symptoms of OCD. 3. COLLABORATE on personalized education plans that accommodate the unique needs of students with OCD, working closely with teachers, parents and other support staff to ensure that students receive appropriate accommodations and support to thrive academically and emotionally. 4. EDUCATE teachers and staff about the biological aspects of OCD to foster a supportive learning environment through activities such as organizing professional development sessions, resources and information to help educators understand the biological basis of OCD and how it may manifest in the school setting. 5. INTEGRATE approaches that involve parents and care givers in managing OCD, including awareness of medical and therapeutic options, providing resources and information to parents about effective treatment options, support networks and strategies for managing symptoms at home and in the community. Schools have become one of the front lines in the battle for youth mental health. The biological factors of OCD in children present a compelling case for comprehensive, science-based interventions with schools, allowing school administrators and mental health professionals to better support affected students in achieving their educational and personal potential.
