I experienced first-hand what it's like to live at the intersection of pain and poverty. While the VA would eventually assist me, I endured a few years of debilitating pain and didn't have insurance because, frankly, I was poor. While my life is so much better now (night and day, really!), I'll never forget what it was like and will do what I can to see that my fellow veterans going through a tough time financially have access to the healthcare they need. Georgia First and other partners of the BRIDGE Coalition are working hard to close the coverage gap for over 30,000 GA #veterans. I am purposefully posting this a day late, because I believe every day should be Veterans' Day. As the great granddaughter, granddaughter, daughter, sister, sister-in-law, former military spouse, and mother of three military brats, Veterans Day isn’t just a holiday; it’s personal. But honoring our veterans should be more than one day—it should be every day. Nick Lampson said it best: "We should take this opportunity to re-evaluate how we are treating our veterans in the present." For those who have given so much, the promise of healthcare—especially mental health support—should be non-negotiable.
