Do you want to know how to light a headshot like this with no additional equipment, no lighting, no reflectors? Shot on Canon R5. 85mm f/1.2L USM DS f/2.0 You just can't beat glorious natural light for a headshot. I love it but there's certain conditions I need for it to work. What are the conditions you ask? When I'm using natural light there's 2 things I'm always looking for - open shade and skylight. Open shade is where the subject is standing in shade, at the edge of the shade. And skylight is a large patch of open sky which falls onto the subject in the shade. A patch of sky directly in front of the subject not obstructed by buildings. Capturing a starburst like this is trickier than it looks. Using a small aperture and the right lens creates the burst effect, but the sun will often blow the scene out completely. Bracketing could be a solution I’ll explore next, but for this shot, I optimized the exposure for the sun and then used Pixelmator Pro to recover the forest's details from the shadows. Imagine you’re looking at a picture that someone took with a camera. Now, think about how your eyes move around that picture. Sometimes, there are parts of the picture that seem to guide your eyes, like arrows pointing the way. These are called "leading lines." Leading lines can be anything: roads, rivers, fences, or even shadows. They help direct where you look in the photo, making it more interesting and helping you understand the scene better. Now, imagine standing on a long, straight road that goes on and on. As you look far down the road, it seems to get narrower until it meets at a tiny point in the distance. This tiny point is called a "vanishing point." The vanishing point is where all the lines in the picture seem to meet, even though they don’t actually touch in real life. It’s a cool trick that makes the photo look 3D and helps show distance and depth, like how far away things are. So, leading lines guide your eyes through the picture, and the vanishing point helps show how far away things are. Early morning reflections in Grand Teton NP. Looking forward to photographing Grand Teton NP, Yellowstone NP, the Beartooth Highway, and hopefully the wild horses near Cody, Wyoming in a couple of weeks. Two quick tips to creating reflections in photography: First, look for an interesting subject in the background and a reflective surface in the foreground. Examples include mountains mirrored in a nearby river or lake (as seen in the picture) or a skyscraper mirrored in a street puddle. Position your camera low enough to capture the entire background subject effectively. Second, utilize a circular polarizing filter. This essential tool allows you to manage the intensity of reflections on surfaces while enhancing the contrast and vibrancy of your images. Always keep it handy in your photography kit for optimal results. Bonus tip: Calm weather is important when trying to photograph reflections on dynamic surfaces such as water. It is best to shoot early morning or in the evening when there is less wind (in my opinion mornings are better for reflections because there tends to be less wind than in the evening.
