This September, our colleague Laura is taking on a meaningful challenge—walking 30 miles with her beloved dogs, Lilly, Holly, and Hannah, to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. 🐾🚶♀️ For Laura, this walk represents hope, strength, and the unwavering commitment to a future where cancer no longer tears families apart. The statistics remind us why this cause is so crucial: - Every two minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer. - Over 385,000 new cancer cases are reported every year in the UK. - Nearly 460 lives are lost to cancer every single day. But thanks to relentless research efforts, cancer survival rates have doubled in the past 50 years. Today, nearly 1 in 2 people diagnosed with cancer will survive for at least 10 years. Curing cancer may seem like an insurmountable goal, but that isn't stopping me from doing my part to help researchers at Columbia University Irving Medical Center do just that. How? 🌟 I'm raising funds and joining hundreds of other riders, survivors, families and friends this October as part of CUIMC's Velocity Ride to end cancer. Why am I riding? 🌟 My cousin, Dr. Andrij Hruszkewycz, passionately believed in finding a cure for cancer. He worked tirelessly toward this goal until he unexpectedly passed away in 2018. 🌟 My mother, Barbara Tymkiw, fought hard but she lost her battle with colon cancer in 1988. (With all the advances since then, I believe she may have survived if she were diagnosed today) 💡 More than 2 million new cancer cases are projected to be diagnosed in the United States this year, according to the American Cancer Society. 👉 I'm convinced that we can turn the tide by joining together to help researchers and doctors develop cutting edge treatments and cures. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🩷 Firefighters are doing everything they can to raise awareness about this deadly disease, prevent it, and advance research toward a cure. Throughout the month, many firefighters are wearing pink T-shirts while on duty or out in the community. Some departments are even selling shirts to raise funds for the American Cancer Society and other cancer organizations to support research and awareness efforts. Why is this important? • The current five-year survival rate for ovarian cancer is just 49%, making it the 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫. Funding vital research in early detection, prevention, and treatment is the only way to improve outcomes for women, girls, and their families everywhere. • Five new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed daily in Australia. We lose more than 1,000 women and girls to this disease each year—equivalent to 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬. • There is 𝐧𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐧𝐨𝐧-𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞. • The majority of patients are diagnosed in advanced stages, where five-year survival rates drop to just 29%.
