This month marks 30 years of the Railways Pension Scheme – one of the largest and longest-established schemes in the UK. The RPS was formed in 1994 following the privatisation of the railways. Today, it supports 350,000 members across over 100 Sections. Overall responsibility for the Scheme sits with the Trustee which delegate the safekeeping and investment of the £34bn assets to Railpen. Railpen is proud to support the Trustee to deliver on its mission to pay pensions securely, affordably and sustainably, which we do through our own purpose of securing our members’ future. Looking back over the last three decades, we see the impact the RPS has had on the lives of members. Andrew Turnball, an active member in his early 20s (and new to rail) has explained how fortunate he feels to have such a good pension scheme available to him, while retired member, Phil Williams, said: “The RPS is an excellent pension scheme and there are very few in the country that can match it”. John Chilman, Railpen CEO for the last six years (having joined the Trustee Board in 2007), reflects on the RPS’ rich heritage and the strong funding position it’s in today: “The success of UK rail is reflected in the fact that we have more active members now than when the industry was privatised in 1994. During that time we’ve seen RPS Sections increase to over 100 and Railpen build its support to the Trustee to address Scheme-specific and increasingly diverse funding and investment requirements. “Railpen’s decision in 2013 to bring our investment management capability in house has amplified our ability to adapt flexibly to enhance funding levels when new opportunities arise. This in particular has played its part in achieving the excellent funding positions we see today across the RPS Sections.” Looking forward, John adds: “I am stepping down as Chief Executive next week. Andy Bord will lead Railpen, and support the Scheme, in the next chapter of its history”.
