In the Irish language, the word for heart is Croí (kree). The word crops up in all sorts of Gaelic phrases like “Grá Geal Mo Chroí” which means bright love of my heart. Brightening up many hearts in the west of Ireland, is the charity Croí, whose mission to prevent heart disease and promote recovery is supported by people like Annie Costelloe, Head of Patient & Community Engagement and centre, Emma Dillon-Leetch, Communications Manager. Their HeartFest mobile health unit takes blood pressure, pulse and cholesterol checks, promotes valve disease awareness and like our own Water Safety Lifesaving Instructors, give CPR demonstrations. The benefits of cold-water swimming for those in good general health are enjoyed by many but if you have a heart condition, there are risks you should consider and discuss with your doctor. Your heart may have to work harder than when you’re on land and the colder the water, the harder the heart must work. Sudden immersion in very cold water can lead to a ‘cold shock’, which can cause a faster heart rate, higher blood pressure, and shortness of breath. Prompt friends and family to enter the water slowly, splashing water around the body, to gradually get used to the change in temperature and depth. Stay within your depth and keep your swims short. Heart related injuries are a serious issue, even more so for those affected while in the water. Well done to Croí for connecting with communities and stimulating conversations that lead to heart health. September 29 is World Heart Day. #WorldHeartDay #Croí

Another concept made easy- Co current and countercurrent flows in dialysis. Cocurrent is when the flow of blood and dialysate are both in the same direction. But this means that after a distance, there is equal saturation on both sides of the membrane, so no further diffusion can occur. Hence, countercurrent flow is preferred- when the blood flow and the dialysate flow are in opposite directions. That way, there is continous concentration gradient maintained throughout the length of the dialyser. Easy? Capiche? Follow us on Youtube https://lnkd.in/d5iSUCwb for more such content. Fall is always a time of new beginnings (and chaos!). I’m facing one of my biggest life transitions - going back to work at Teladoc Health in November after having a baby. Here’s how I’m making sure I feel my best physically & mentally - 1. Getting regular exercise - I love a combination of Orangetheory Fitness, walks with the little one, quick (and slow) neighborhood runs, and 20-30 min weight-focused workouts at home. My goal is at least 150 mins per week. (Let’s be friends on Strava! https://lnkd.in/eNTWMqE9) 2. Meal prep - I have less time than ever to cook, but know I feel my best when I eat whole foods including lots of veggies and protein. We’ve been making dense bean salad (great to grab out of the fridge), chili with beans, and kale sautéed with beans and chicken sausage. I also stock up on easy grab and go options like tuna salad, Greek yogurt (I top with chia seeds and frozen fruit), and bell peppers. 3. Getting vaccinated - I do NOT want to be down for the count this winter, and I want to do everything I can to protect the little one. October is the perfect time to get your flu, covid, and RSV vaccine to be protected for peak season through the winter. Ask your primary care provider what vaccines are recommended for your age and circumstances. What are you doing to feel your best this fall? #winterarc #prevention
