Post-grad news: I'm happy to share that I'll be starting as Mid-Ohio Food Collective's Communications Coordinator next week! I'm eager to support MOFC's mission of combatting hunger in Franklin County and beyond through their food banks, farm, 'farmacy,' kitchen and markets. The USDA's Economic Research Service reported that food insecurity in the U.S. rose from 12.8% (17 million) in 2022 to 13.5% (18 million) in 2023. Comparatively, in 2020 and 2021, at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, food insecurity was recorded at 10.5% (13.8 million) and 10.2% (13.5 million) respectively. The topic of food insecurity in America is more prevalent than ever, so I encourage you to volunteer with MOFC or your local food bank, especially during this holiday season. According to the latest report from Feeding America, 13.4% of Southeast Nebraskans are experiencing food insecurity. This staggering number means 64,510 neighbors—including 20,320 kids—may not know where their next meal will come from. This new data from the Map the Meal Gap 2024 study reveals a 34% increase in food insecurity in Southeast Nebraska from the year prior, highlighting the growing demand for food assistance and the importance of community support. The level of food insecurity in New York City has increased significantly since the beginning of the pandemic. According to an analysis by Feeding America, the number of New York City residents struggling with food insecurity has risen by 36% overall and by 46% among children. We are grateful to our grantee partner City Harvest for responding to the crisis. They have rescued more than 1 billion pounds of nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste—working with restaurants, wholesalers, grocery stores, farms, and other partners— to distribute that food to individuals and families in need. Mainebiz reports that the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program in Brunswick has received $350K in funding to support farms and food businesses in the area.
