What is Natural Homebuilding? Natural homebuilding refers to constructing homes using natural materials and techniques that promote sustainability and harmony with the environment. This approach emphasizes the use of renewable resources, minimizing environmental impact, and enhancing indoor air quality. Common materials include straw bales, cob, adobe, wood, and natural stones, often combined to create unique and functional designs. Benefits of Natural Homebuilding One of the primary benefits of natural homebuilding is its reduced carbon footprint. By using locally sourced materials and eco-friendly construction methods, these homes are often more energy-efficient and cheaper to maintain. Additionally, natural homes are known for their durability and aesthetic appeal, often blending seamlessly into their surroundings. How to Get Started If you're interested in natural homebuilding, start by researching local building codes and zoning laws to ensure compliance. Consider taking workshops or courses on natural building techniques, such as straw bale construction or earthbag building. Building a small model or a temporary structure can also help you gain hands-on experience. This image depicts a modern urban street illuminated by a series of LED streetlights. The scene captures a nighttime setting where the lights cast a bright and uniform glow along a multi-lane road, bordered by buildings and landscaped greenery. The buildings on both sides of the road appear to host commercial establishments, as evidenced by the illuminated shopfronts and signage. The light poles are evenly spaced, ensuring optimal illumination for both vehicular traffic and pedestrians. The design and placement of these LED streetlights showcase several key benefits, including energy efficiency, long lifespan, and minimal light pollution. By focusing the light downward, the streetlights enhance visibility while reducing glare and wasted light. This feature contributes to both safety and environmental sustainability. The incorporation of greenery, such as trees and shrubs along the median and sidewalks, complements the urban infrastructure, creating a visually appealing and eco-friendly environment. This scene demonstrates how advanced lighting technology can transform cityscapes, offering not only functionality but also aesthetic value. LED streetlights, like those depicted, are increasingly becoming a staple in modern urban planning due to their ability to meet the demands of safety, energy efficiency, and environmental conservation. This example underscores the potential of integrating innovative solutions to build smarter, more sustainable cities.

LIVING SPACE FOR ALL Housing is a core need of a society. And this includes affordable, high-quality space for living as well as public space. It is therefore all our duty to ensure that everyone - regardless of their financial situation - has the right to a good living space. First and foremost, this requires diversity at a wide range of levels - preferably demanded by the state. Because the time of residential blocks is over, we need to knit our city into diverse neighbourhoods. This is why we are developing a variety of spaces with people as the main focus. We architects need to scrutinise our tasks more closely and not only consider the structural, ecological and economic aspects of a building project, but also the political, financial, cultural and social aspects - Think buildings holistically. Who are the users? What are their needs? Which stakeholders does a new place need? What impact do these people have on each other and on the neighbourhood? What financing models are possible - building groups, private ownership, privately financed or subsidised, community buildings or assisted living. As a team of architects, we need to not only have this mix in mind but demand it. Read more in our Dossier: "Living Space for all" on our website.
