🌟 Embracing the Power of Success: How Our Interactions Shape Growth 🌟 The seminar "Project Management/Projektmanagement in der Praxis" is one of my favorite facilitation topics and I really enjoy seeing how interactions within a group of delegates shape growth and understanding. Just last week I had the privilege of collaborating with Management-Institut Dr. A. Kitzmann GmbH & Co. KG at one of their clients in Darmstadt. One powerful concept that consistently emerges from these interactions is the idea that "success breeds success." Every conversation, every exchange of ideas, and every moment of shared learning has served as fertile ground for growth and achievement. As we engage in meaningful discussions, collaborate on projects, and support one another's endeavors, we create a ripple effect of success that extends far beyond the confines of our individual interactions. What I've observed time and time again is that success is contagious. 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞: 𝐀 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 In my early days, I spearheaded a high-stakes initiative that, despite our best efforts, fell short of its objectives. The experience was a bitter pill to swallow, yet it became one of my most significant learning opportunities. The project was an ambitious overhaul of an existing technology system intended to streamline operations for a major client. The scope was vast, the timelines aggressive, and the team, while highly skilled, under immense pressure. When the system went live, it immediately encountered problems that led to operational disruptions, client dissatisfaction, and stress across the board. Lessons learned: 1. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐎𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: The first lesson was about taking ownership. I learned the importance of accepting responsibility, not just for the success but also the failures. This responsibility prompted a thorough analysis of what went awry, which was crucial for our growth. 2. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: We recognized that our downfall was partly due to communication gaps. Regular updates, clearer expectations, and more structured feedback loops were implemented to ensure alignment and transparency. 3. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Every failure offers a chance to revisit the drawing board. We overhauled our project management approach, incorporating more rigorous risk assessment and mitigation strategies. 4. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠: Developing a thick skin and a flexible mindset were perhaps the most vital outcomes. Understanding that setbacks were not the end, but rather pivots to approach things differently, helped us maintain our resolve and improve our methods. 5. 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭: I was fortunate to have mentors who guided me through this challenging phase. Their advice and unwavering support underscored the value of having a robust support network. Following these changes, not only did our team become stronger, but our projects also saw increased success rates. We became a unit that could tackle complex problems with a more strategic, experienced approach. This failure, while initially a setback, forged a path to many subsequent successes and personal growth. Reflecting on this journey, I am reminded of the transformative power of facing failures head-on. These experiences shape us, teach us, and ultimately, lead us to success. Tonight, as I was putting my son to bed, we read Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss. Beyond being a whimsical journey through life’s ups and downs—or a go-to graduation gift—I realized something striking (in the most LinkedIn way possible): this story mirrors the lifecycle of projects and teams. Whether it’s Tuckman’s Ladder or navigating the twists of an ever-changing environment, Dr. Seuss captures the essence of the project and team journey. It starts with excitement where anything is possible and no challenge is too big: “Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So get on your way!" This is where we initiate a project or first form together as a team—energized, aligned, and ready to conquer new challenges. But challenges inevitably arise, leading us to lows and towards that "most useless place", the waiting place: “Wherever you fly, you'll be best of the best. Wherever you go, you will top all the rest. Except when you don't. Because, sometimes, you won't." Projects hit roadblocks. Teams stall. Progress feels slow. It’s in these moments that perseverance and determination are tested. Yet, just like the protagonist, great teams pull through. They adapt, innovate, and push forward: “And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed.)” It isn’t just about a long catalogue of PMP terms and tools, the shiniest new framework, or a sleek PowerPoint presentation—it’s about people. Those who dream big, challenge the status quo, and inspire their teams to soar to new heights. At the end of the day, people are the greatest asset, and are capable of driving immense change even in adverse situations. What about you? The most rewarding aspect of leadership is often the mentorship of emerging leaders. Having guided many associate project managers (APMs), project managers (PMs), and senior project managers (SPMs), mentorship shapes careers and drives innovation. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗙𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗹" 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 Real-world exposure is crucial for effective learning. I introduce less experienced team members to projects immediately, allowing them to observe site visits and participate in project meetings. They gain insights into project dynamics, reducing the shock and pressure often faced by more senior project managers. As they gain confidence, I may assign them to take meeting minutes. This helps them understand project scope and complexities while emphasizing the importance of clear communication. By capturing key issues and noting key steps and responsible parties, they enhance their ability to identify critical elements and understand team responsibilities. 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 At a large brokerage firm, I held weekly "power hour" coffee klatch team meetings in open, informal settings. These meetings provided staff with insights into various projects beyond their immediate responsibilities. By understanding and contributing to ongoing projects, they are prepared to step in when necessary, ensuring continuity and often offering fresh perspectives that others may not have considered. 𝗙𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 This informal relaxed setting encouraged dialogue and allowed real estate brokers to overhear project discussions, sparking interest and fostering collaboration. By engaging in our conversations, brokers began to see the value of our role in their sales process, leading to a more integrated approach. Additionally, APMs and PMs felt less intimidated by experienced team leads and brokers, fostering relationships with colleagues outside our department. 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 This foundation enables new hires to take on more complex roles and projects by gradually increasing their responsibilities and allowing them to lead future projects confidently. 𝗔 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 Reflecting on these experiences, I am curious how my colleagues mentor their young leaders. Are we equipping them with the tools and experiences needed to thrive? Here’s what I learned from this experience: In any business or project, the foundation of success lies in clear communication, mutual understanding, and well-defined goals. Whether you’re working with clients, teams, or stakeholders, aligning expectations from the outset can make all the difference in achieving desired outcomes. Here’s how: 💡 1. Understanding Expectations Before diving into any task, it's crucial to fully understand the expectations of all involved parties.
