Visited this country, Singapore almost few times every year. The multi racial culture, food, tradition and even street name have many similarity with Penang island of Malaysia where i'm from. Both cities were part of the Straits Settlement under British and we inherited many practices, system and governance from the British colonisation. In business, there are many local and multinational companies here that have their setup or factory in Penang. We share common pool of customers but in different specialisation. Many companies make Singapore as their regional hub for finance and marketing while Penang as their manufacturing centre. Many Singaporean or Penangites have their close blood relatives in either of these two cities. This is how the 2 cities are special. Aenon Solutions being a company start up and built its business in Penang Malaysia. Many of our clients have make Singapore as their strategic regional setup. Manila secures the 76th rank in the Brand Finance Global City Index 2024! The city shows significant improvements in the People & Values pillar, ranking higher for 'fun' (up 15 places) and 'friendly' (up 23 places), reflecting its vibrant and welcoming spirit. Economically, Manila advances in 'access to a skilled workforce' (up 11 places) and leaps from 81st to 43rd in 'ease of finding employment', surpassing Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, and Hong Kong. Most of us grew up with YiKoWei Pte Ltd. We share the same birth year. Their traditional kueh and pastries lie in the heartbeat of Singapore’s food scene. I first handled their rebrand 4 years ago. Now, 41 years into the game, something different would enter the fray: A fresh batch of cookies, yet unnamed. The goal was simple: launch these cookies to echo the local sensibility that YiKoWei is known for. Turn them into souvenirs of Singapore. How to shape food as a cultural memento? How to make a new product feel familiar? Go to work. Started with the basics - what’s there to see? First impressions last. To create a uniquely Singaporean identity, we turned to symbolism. The Singapore orchid, with 5 petals in varying colours to represent diverse ethnic communities, reinforces the idea of cultural unity. The tins were launched during National Day as part of goodie packs. Garnered recognition and acceptance pretty quick. Can’t forget about social media. A "Guess the Flavour" contest became an engagement tool, intertwining the intricacies of flavours with the brand's essence, creating lasting connections. Harmony Cookies, with its rich heritage, unique visual storytelling, and engaging launch strategy, carved a distinctive position in the competitive landscape, embodying the spirit of Singapore. 𝐈 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲, 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: 𝐀 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 Last Thursday night, I learned a valuable lesson in prioritizing what truly matters to me. I was supposed to board the last bus from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur at 11.30pm to meet three incredible ladies for an International Women's Day gathering and to discuss the launch of our Xiao Hong Shu community. However, I made a #mistake. I did not purchase a bus ticket in advance and assumed I could easily get one upon arrival at the station. To my dismay, the bus tickets were sold out, and a man attempted to sell me a scalped ticket at a 25% markup. I hesitated for a moment, weighing my options. After some reflection, I decided to say "NO" to the scalper and instead called a GrabCar to return home. I promptly informed the ladies about my situation, and we agreed that I would join the gathering online. While they enjoyed their time together in Kuala Lumpur, I savoured a relaxing evening at a cozy cafe in Johor Bahru. This experience reminded me of the importance of valuing my money, time, and #friendships. By making a wise choice, I was able to save #money, avoid unnecessary stress, and still nurture the #connections that matter most to me. Are you ready to be entertained this week? Jakartans and visitors will be spoiled in Jakarta. There will be 2 major entertainment events happening back to back. First, it will be the World Cup Qualifying Match between Indonesia and Australia on 10th September at Gelora Bung Karno. Indonesia will be the favorite in this match because Indonesia is the host and the stadium was blessed by Pope Francis last week. 😁 The Second event is Bruno Mars' concert at Jakarta International Stadium on the 11th, 13th, and 14th of September. This visit will be special to mark Bruno Mars' third concert in Indonesia and promote his new song with Lady Gaga: "Die With A Smile." To all business-minded people, these events will bring enormous business potential. For example, drinks-related businesses like PT. Sinar Sosro, Danone Aqua and PT. Mayora Indah Tbk will record high sales numbers due to high demand in drinks to cope with Indonesia's hot and humid climate. Other businesses that will reap huge money are transportation, personal care, cellular phones, and apparel, and oh, have I mentioned pinjol (with salary in Jakarta, some people surely need financial support for entertainment)? “He’s a man of culture.” ✈️ I cannot miss having the coffee opportunity with the Lord, Eric Siew. But, I did. We were set to meet, but I had to take an urgent flight to Tokyo for business. Literally ‘fong fei gei.” 📆 After #MKKFest, we finally managed to reschedule and I was determined to meet the #ManOfCulture behind Choobub Creatives. 💡 We discussed so many topics, but one stood out - something especially relevant for someone like me who’s just starting a business: “Culture or profits. Choose one.” ♥️ Eric chose culture over profits. 💀 Choosing culture doesn’t mean your business will ‘gulung tikar’ in three months. It simply means you might not see extraordinary growth immediately. Progress will be steady but slow and the $$ numbers won’t skyrocket overnight. 🌱 But choosing culture means building a team that works in unison - no solo heroes, no silos. Everyone is there for the team and ready to take one for the team. Building a company based on culture is like growing durians: planting the seed, nurturing the tree and waiting patiently for the fruits.
