ICYMI: It’s been a bumper September for retail sales which are up 2% - the highest increase in the past 6 months, supposedly driven by back to school shopping. 🎒 And this all in #SecondHandSeptember, which shows that - despite the high profile fashion shows at #LFW and countless celebrity endorsements for the campaign - we continue to have an over consumption problem in the UK. 🌍 💡 Did you know that there are already enough clothes in existence to dress the next six generations? Or that 30% of unwanted clothes end up in landfill, a total of 1.2 million tonnes of textiles every year? And as we gear up for Halloween, did you know that buying just one new costume generates enough carbon to heat your home for an entire month this winter? 🎃 These are all shocking stats that should be enough to make shoppers think #SecondHandFirst and keep our shopping habits in check. But sadly it doesn’t seem to be the case. Has #SecondHandSeptember had a lasting impact on your shopping habits? How will you shop #preloved first? #SecondHand #Sustainability #ConsciousConsumption https://lnkd.in/e2UWBFkp

According to the BDO High Street Sales Tracker, Fashion really struggled in April probably not helped by the wet weather. We have all heard of April showers but the current pattern seems more like the April monsoon to me! This has stalled our wardrobe change when normally retailers would start to see customers shopping their new Spring & Summer ranges in readiness for the first heat wave. High street sales fell for the fifth consecutive month with April tracking 1.7% down. Fashion and Homeware were worst affected at -8% and -1.5% respectively. The Homeware sector includes cookware, furniture, floor coverings, lighting, linen & textiles. That now means Fashion has had 8 months of negative store sales on the bounce. When online is factored in, we see a more positive picture for the homeware category taking it from negative to a small positive position. The only sector breaking the mould was Lifestyle. This is defined as general household goods, gifts, health, beauty and leisure goods - both stores and online grew over the period vs 2023 which is good to see. Online sales performed better last month so when seen in the round with stores, April recovered to being broadly flat. No question, we are all cutting back on discretionary spending and there's a trend increasingly to spend our money on experiences rather than conventional products. Inevitably, this may lead to further consolidation in the sector with more jobs potentially at risk. Let’s hope we can ride the storm and interest rates start to fall soon. I'm also looking forward to seeing that large golden ball high up in a clear blue sky to create that much needed feel good factor!

Primark was slower than its rivals to move online—and it continues to take a cautious approach as it expands its click-and-collect trial. It's a strategy that has paid off so far, with the retailer reporting robust trading last year—in contrast to the declines faced by some of its online fast-fashion rivals. I shared some thoughts with Retail Gazette's Georgia Wright for this article that explores what the future holds for Primark online. https://lnkd.in/e-hDSVfd #primark #fastfashion #ecommerce #clickandcollect

Interesting article about Primark's click & collect trial in London. The test & learn introduction to Ecommerce benefits both customers & store traffic. Will Primark go further into online selling? The article explores the barriers Primark faces, such as margin, returns rates, basket size & delivery costs. But there are other issues such as single picking & central stock availability. With substantial opportunities for growth without 'risking' online profitability, will a digital loyalty scheme, the symbiotic relationship between stores & online & the need for greater social media presence for Gen Z make online selling an inevitability? #retailsales values grew y-o-y by +3.1% in Feb, but volume growth (-0.5%) remains elusive - for now. Implied shop price inflation (3.6%) coming down nicely. More revealing than the headline stats of a "a flat m-o-m performance" and the ONS declaring strong volume growth in clothing (y-o-y #fashion values -1.9%, volumes -6.8%). #consumerdemand remains volatile. #kfretail #highstreet #online #retail #grocery #ecommerce #online https://lnkd.in/gUw6Ke_k
