A room with a view
Energy security issues and our neighbouring country's EU Presidency were the focus of the recent Strategic Capital Networking (SCN) visit to Budapest with the Environment and Energy Policy Department of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO). In particular, the discussion with László Szabó and Péter Kotek from the REKK Regional Centre for Energy Policy Research at the Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem / Corvinus University of Budapest provided new perspectives.
REKK's mission is to contribute to the sustainable development of the Hungarian and regional energy sector through policy-oriented and scientifically sound research. Its particular expertise lies in the area of market modelling. This includes the implementation of energy system transformation, the competitiveness of natural gas, district heating and renewable energy, especially with regard to supply, pricing and licensing issues. REKK's main clients are the European Commission, national regulators and ministries, and energy companies.
Another question has become even more pressing: Is the security of gas and oil supplies still guaranteed in the context of the war in Ukraine? What happens if Russia is no longer able to supply these energy sources in the foreseeable future? What impact would this have on energy supply and prices in Austria and its neighbouring countries?
REKK plans to publish a policy brief on energy security in the EU, including Austria and Hungary, on its website soon. Until then, we will content ourselves with the view from the REKK meeting room of the beautiful old town houses of Budapest. They have seen a lot in their time. This should give us hope that we too can find ways out of the crises of the present. The results of the REKK study are not based on expectations or fears, but on figures, data and facts. These are always the best conditions for a solution.
Special thanks to László Szabó and Péter Kotek for their valuable insights!
