An interesting and almost idealistic piece. I cannot deny that reading about wind-powered ships, brought to mind the idea of "a romantic 17th century pirate galleon approach"; however, as the article rightly says the industry now has "modern, 21st century materials, design, digital control, and operational optimization through satellites, sensors and wind routing software", in essence (almost) everything that it is needed to consider the wind energy as a real alternative to fuel. I specifically like the remark that says the "As an industry, we still tend to take a ‘fuel-centric’ approach to all things shipping, rather than an ‘energy-centric’ one, however, once you plug in an abundant, globally available ‘free’ energy source that is available to everyone today, then our pathway to delivering profitable, cleaner and more resilient shipping services in the coming decades takes an interesting alternative tack"; two things in particular "energy-centric" and "free energy source"! As I fly to NYC for Climate Week & participation in the Wall Street Journal’s AI panel at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), I’m humbled by how far Buzz Solutions has come in the last few years…almost entirely led by our clients guidance and coaching. As the world continues toward increasing power demands, with aging infrastructure, and new generation options…it will take a global effort to overcome the trends of the last 50 years…or more. traveling wave relays In the technical papers that I presented, I discuss high-speed switches. They can operate very much faster than the current 50 ms breakers. what it uses is a neutral circuit is it resistance to allow the switches to interrupt lower currents, as the resistance and circuit lowers the capacitive coupling, discharges, that return back to the prayer, making it difficult to interrupt. In my paper, I show that as a circuit with resistance and a cross through the device. Peterson way of discussing a resonant circuit. The reason why this type of fast switch doesn’t exist. It’s one of those Chicken or the egg decisions. The utility has the data to make such calculations but it’s data that they usually would not want to have available to all manufactures. The other hand, the manufacturer, kind of want to spend time making some if they can’t get the data. The design is very costly, but to make repeat designs would be relatively affordable. Therefore, at the IEEE meetings, I discussed using some method of double blind surveys or some method to obtain the data so this type of technology can move forward. Unfortunately, the discussion of this type of technology is so complicated that you need a several Phd’s in the room with decades of experienc in both designing both power systems and designing the switching devices to get a clue what I am talking about. I don’t need do you need to know your basic power systems engineering you also have to have a strong knowledge of symmetric components, switchgear, lines, cables, machine and transformer magnetics.
