How to Choose the Right Legal Recruiter and Why It Matters: 1. A good recruiter can get your resume noticed by both active and passive employers. Internal recruiters receive hundreds of emails daily, but they pay attention to those from recruiters with a proven track record. A respected recruiter can ensure your application stands out and advocate for you effectively. 2. Great recruiters take the time to understand your career goals and offer honest advice. I've often advised candidates to stay at their current firm if I felt it was in their best interest. Look for a recruiter who is focused on your long-term success, not just a quick placement. 3. Legal recruiters draft cover letters and ensure your application materials truly reflect your sucesses. I spend at least an hour on each submission to ensure it highlights your strengths. A good recruiter makes sure your application is polished and tailored to each job. 4. Check LinkedIn to research recruiters. Read reviews and see how they communicate. Look for someone who is transparent, thoughtful, and deliberate, and most importantly hard-working. 5. Find Someone You Trust Choose a recruiter you feel comfortable with and can trust. Building a long-term relationship is important. I strive to be not just a recruiter, but a career partner and friend. Thank you for reading. I’m always available for a no-pressure chat if you’re curious about the market, legal trends, or considering a lateral move. Having a good recruiter on your side can make all the difference.

We decided to be our own lawyers and handle all our own legal work. ...said no one, ever. Just as you rely on a lawyer for their extensive experience and professional training to navigate legal complexities safely and effectively, you should rely on an expert when it comes to recruiting. You don’t hire a lawyer because you can’t fill out forms. You hire them because they know how to represent you in ways you simply can’t do on your own. The same goes for external recruiters—you don’t bring one on because you can’t find candidates, but because you can’t find new candidates. As an HR professional with an expansive network and deep connections through my role with the Detroit LERA chapter, I have access to talent pools that you might not even know exist. It’s all about reaching beyond the familiar to uncover the talent that will take your business to the next level. You’ve made a serious investment in growing your business; now it’s time to invest in staffing it with top talent. Got an open requisition list? Let’s work together to find the people you didn’t know were out there. Making great hires doesn’t have to be a chore—it can be exciting, transformative, and just a bit of fun. 🚀 Send me a message, and let’s get started!

Why do some people succeed as recruiters, while others seemingly perfect for the role do not? This question was posed to search firm owners during a breakout session at the NALSC: the National Association of Legal Search Consultants 2024 Annual Conference last spring in San Diego. The session facilitators, NALSC members Carol Crossdale of CROSSDALE SEARCH and Victoria Gamble of Gamble Partner Placement wrote in the latest NALSC newsletter that, “As recruiters, our function is to assist our employer clients in identifying and hiring the best lawyers for their teams. But, have we thought as long and hard about the qualities of the people we want to add to our own recruiting teams?” Working collaboratively, session attendees came up with a list of characteristics that a successful recruiter should have.
