Barco was happy to host a keynote presentation by Willy Vandenbrande in celebration of 14th November - World Quality Day! Willy surely brought up some thought-provoking points. Some key takeaways: 💡 Quality goes beyond product specs - it’s about ensuring excellence across the entire process. 💡Your next colleague in the chain is your customer. Viewing each other this way promotes stronger collaboration. 💡The famous Cost-Quality-Delivery triangle isn’t a balancing act as it's often misunderstood; sacrificing one creates long-term issues. 💡“No matter what management thinks about the costs of poor quality, in reality it is 6 times higher.” 💡Accountability is key - quality is everyone’s responsibility, not just the quality team’s. 💡There is never lack of time, there is always lack of priorities. Big role of managers is not only to say what to do, but also say what NOT to do. 💡Managers’ tasks: Create an environment for optimal team performance, foster urgency, develop team skills, and then let them play: When the game is on, a great manager is the one watching from the bench. We get it. You hear ‘brand values’ and you yawn. These values are usually a few words or sentences that someone ‘at the top’ has noted down and they aren’t actually put into action.   Not here.   At Oceros, the whole team sat down and chatted through who we are, who we want to be, and what values will underpin every decision we make.   So there you are, no yawning there, right? How many times do we have regrets about our past decisions? How often do we want to change a current situation if we had the possibility? This powerful car safety Ad (New Zealand) not only resonated with me on its main purpose of responsibility, but it triggered a lot of other questions, which also are questions we face daily in business situations: - do we make responsible decisions towards our clients, staff, stakeholders or towards our planet? - do we respect enough other people’s thinking, challenge our own thoughts? - what are rhetorical long term consequences of the decisions we make? On top of that whether it’s business or not, there’s the butterfly effect. We don’t always see it, but our past decisions have already triggered a number of actions and facts, most of them were not even aware of. Sometimes it’s useful to regroup, take a step back, put our ego on the side, ask others for advice and think twice before taking action.

Have you ever taken a wrong turning because you were busy chatting? You know the reason for this don’t you? It’s because we can’t multi-task. My partner and I have just proven this concept. We got to a tricky set of roundabouts (you know the ones, just by Bracknell)) and he said, “I just need to focus on driving for a minute.” And I was super proud of him. But then at the next set of roundabouts (they never end) he forgot about this and started chatting again. You can guess the rest. The point is - it’s easy to think “that doesn’t apply to me”. As a pilot I was convinced for years I could multi-task. Or you might buy in to the logic but simply forget to apply it. You’re human. So here’s your friendly reminder. Focus on ONE thing at a time. Choose that ONE thing (the thing that’s most helpful in that moment.) In other words, FLY THE AIRCRAFT. Oh and if you’re wondering, it’s a Skoda Citigo we are driving.
