#California: A historic Sierra Nevada blizzard shuttered ski resorts and made travel nearly impossible across parts of California in recent days. High elevation snowfall totals were measured in feet, and in several locations wind gusts exceeded 100 mph (160 kph). Hundreds of vehicles and trucks were stranded along Interstate-80, and transportation disruptions were anticipated continue for days. The winter storm was aided by a slow-moving low-pressure system which allowed a steady stream of Pacific moisture to interact with cooler air sinking southward from Canada. By March 4, seasonal basin wide snow water equivalent (how much water the snowpack contains) values reached above 100% of average in the Sierra Nevada. Heavy snowfall likewise impacted regions of northern California, the Cascades, and parts of Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming.
