How do you make the invisible visible? That’s the question my guest, Dr. Carrie Niederman, and I discussed in episode 110 of The Visibility Factor Podcast. Dr. Niederman’s whole life changed when she came down with a viral infection that triggered a chronic illness she still has to this day. Unlike a physical disability that requires a wheelchair, a very visible signal that something is going on, her condition is invisible. Nothing about her appearance screams “I’m sick” or “I need accommodations to do my work”, and yet she very much is and does. Her experience brings up an important question for managers today: How many of your employees are dealing with an invisible issue right now? How can you lead with empathy, flexibility, and sensitivity? This episode was rather different from our typical content, but I really think you’ll appreciate this open discussion about visibility from a different perspective. Give it a listen and let me know what you think – the link is in the comments! #thevisibilityfactor #visibilitypodcast #workplaceinclusion #careerpodcast #chronicillness ------------------------------- 👋 Hi! Today, March 20, is #WorldHappinessDay and so if you're at work and you're reading, take a moment to reflect: what makes you #happy at work? For me - when I'm happiest at work I'm doing something meaningful. According to Michael Pratt, from Boston College Carroll School of Management, a true pioneer in the study of #meaningfulwork, there are at least six different ways we tend to think about what makes work worth doing (listen to our conversation about it here: https://lnkd.in/eDqsnExd). Using Michael's framework, it's definitely a combination of a few things that make me happiest at work. First and foremost, I am #passionate about eudaimonia and meaningful work and so if I get to spend my time thinking, talking, or working to bring more eudaimonic wellbeing into people's work lives, it is definitely a good day. But that also means that work is meaningful when I get to build #mastery in how I do my work, especially when I get to do that in #service to others who are doing deeply meaningful work. How would you describe your ultimate WHY for work? (Seriously - tell me below)! I also double dare you: find a way to ask someone today about what makes them happiest at work. And if you do - let me know how it goes! #meaningfulworkmatters, #eudaimonicbydesign
We recently had Michael Pratt on the Meaningful Work Matters podcast, and he left us feeling validated in our pursuit of meaningful work. To Michael, what makes work meaningful is truly up to you. Michael shares six “work orientations” or ways of thinking about what makes work worthwhile. - Do you get a lot out of your interpersonal relationships at work? - Is work mostly a way to provide for your family or passions outside the office? - Is work about becoming excellent at what you do? - Are you focused on being in service to others? - Is your ambition to climb the ladder and gain more status? - Or, do you work because you’re simply passionate about what you do? Michael notes that they’re all valid. Reflecting on how you orient to work can also be a helpful tool if you hit a career slump or find yourself less happy at work. Michael is passionate about making research accessible and understandable to all, so we know you’ll get a lot out of this conversation. Let us know how you find meaning in your work 💬 🎧 https://lnkd.in/evWaeax2

If you’re a manager, it's natural to pull back from talking about the future with an employee when times are uncertain. But Gallup research has consistently shown that how you feel about your professional development and future in an organization greatly influences your likelihood of staying. So don’t hesitate to discuss a team member’s development. Aim to have at least one meaningful conversation each week.
