For the sixth and final installment of our #AI in Business Education series Nanyang Business School, in Singapore, supported a pilot project to redesign curricula and learning assessments to embrace generative AI tools through a case study project assessing the output of different GenAI prompts co-designed with faculty. Six years and a tech revolution later, the perception and the status of #ai in #education have transformed. In 2018, on the Singapore leg of his roadshow presenting France’s AI strategy, I asked Cédric Villani why Education wasn’t one of the 5 listed focus areas. "Because education is difficult", he answered. As someone in EdTech I was disappointed but I knew he was right. Fast forward to 2024, the French AI Commission's report to the President underscores a seismic shift, highlighting Education as a pivotal area where generative AI could make a profound impact. At the 2024 AACSB International Conference in Atlanta, attendees experienced a first look at ChatSDG, an AI tool developed by the Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph's University Joseph’s University. Touted as a transformative solution for business school accreditation, ChatSDG assesses how academic research aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. However, while the tool aims to streamline the AACSB accreditation process and enhance curriculum relevance, it raises important questions about the efficacy and depth of AI evaluations. The AI's ability to accurately measure the "impact intensity" of research and truly capture its real-world effects remains debatable. As we embrace such technological advancements, it's crucial to balance innovation with critical oversight to ensure these tools do not oversimplify complex academic assessments. Second day at EDUtech Asia, Timothy Tan keynote got me reflecting on the work of building partnerships across sectors and disciplines, where trust is built incrementally. Tan's insights resonated deeply, emphasizing the importance of collective partnership between government, tech providers, and educators. He stressed the importance of balancing AI innovation with responsible use: "I don't believe that AI will replace teachers. How can we empower students to use AI without becoming overdependent? Building high trust and high touch into this technology is key to using it with peace of mind."
