Hey world! Following an acquisition and layoffs at WeTransfer, I'm looking for a new job. I took a few weeks to soul search (picture me, brooding amongst the fall foliage 🍁 and developing hand cramps from excessive journaling), and have decided for my next job that I'd like to (drumroll please 🥁 🥁 🥁) continue in software engineering (hooray!). If you happen to know someone who's hiring, I'd immensely appreciate a connection 🙏 Besides a paycheck that will enable me to pay my mortgage, I'm really looking for the chance to make a positive social impact with my work--I'm particularly passionate about 👩🎓 education, 📖 literacy, 🧐 critical thinking skill development (tbh anything 📚 book or publishing adjacent would also be amazing), 🗳 civic engagement, and 🌿 sustainability. Hey GenX! Have you dreamed about a life outside of corporate where you're in charge of your time, doing the work you want to do? But are worried you don’t have the skills or that it is too risky to go solo? I get it, I was in that same position But here are 5 reasons why that is not the case: 1. Corporate has brainwashed us into believing the only safe path is to stay in corporate, but there is nothing safe about corporate for GenXers—or anyone, for that matter. Layoffs, ageism, automation, job market—pick your poison 2. In corporate, you have zero control over anything. You do what they want, how they want it, and when they want it 3. You do have the experience and skills necessary to go solo. If someone is paying you to do a job, your skills will transfer 4. Small businesses are hungry for your experience but until recently didn’t have access to the talent and experience you possess. Fractional and other models make it affordable for them and you! 5. The best part is you can and should start this while you are still in corporate! OWNERSHIP is crucial when hiring a software engineer! When I was at Software Technology Group, I hired an engineer by the name of Joshua Talltree. He was full of energy and also ownership. I loved that about him. He has achieved many things while working for his current company AgReserves, Inc. From day one he showed me what ownership meant and on a weekly basis he would call or text me with results of what he had accomplished that week. When we spoke on the phone he knew what was expected of him. This is how he exemplified ownership: 🫡 He knew what his end goal was and would engage in proactive learning to get there 🤩 He respected his managers and went above and beyond to build their trust 👏 Every week he would ask me what he could do to improve his skills 👍 He embraced the STG culture and sought after "doing the right thing" 💯 His attitude was always in the right place even if things were hard At JobNimbus, one of our core values in Ownership. 🚩 PSA: Beware the Red Flags (and no, they're not just for capture the flag) 🚩 It's tough out there, adventurers, but it’s even tougher when you find yourself stuck in a company where the red flags are popping up faster than side quests. Recently, I took on a mission that seemed promising at first—until I realized I’d been handed a ripped and burnt map. 🚩 No clear documentation on anything (seriously, can a girl get a quest log?) 🚩 Goals kept shifting (60 days till the deadline turned into 30? To use or not to use?) 🚩 A lot of improper usage of AI ( ...I don't even know how to explain how bad.) 🚩 Crucial legal issues were straight-up ignored (because apparently signatures and company info are optional now?) 🚩 Leadership felt like a chaotic raid party with no strategy. 🚩 Direction? A spinning compass. 🚩 Promises? Vague at best. 🚩 And when possible clients started asking if the whole program was legit and I addressed my concerns of this and more? …. Instead of addressing/fixing the problems, and concerns and building trust, I got booted for "not doing my job." 🤯 All of this in under 3 weeks! 💜 But here’s the thing: it wasn’t me, and if you’re dealing with similar nonsense or were given the boot after similar things, it’s not you either. If your job feels like a never-ending grind with constant miscommunication and legal issues being ignored, it's time to pack up your gear and move on. You deserve a guild that equips you with the right tools, values your effort, and listens when you sound the alarm. 🚩 Don’t stay in a party full of red flags—you’re worth more than that! #RedFlags #KnowYourWorth #QuestForBetterJobs #YouDeserveBetter #LevelUpYourCareer #LayOffs #GreenBanner
