As part of The Refill Coalition, Ocado Retail has today announced a pilot of a new ‘pre-fill’ reusable packaging scheme. The new reusable range will include frequently purchased items: Ocado Reuse Basmati Rice 2kg Ocado Reuse Penne Pasta 1kg Ocado Reuse Non-Bio- Liquid Detergent 3L Ocado Reuse Skies Fabric Conditioner 3L reducing the use of single-use plastic on everyday items whilst providing the same quality and value. The standardised pre-filled reusable container is a mini version of the reusable vessel already trialled in-store by @AldiUK The trial begins today with dry goods and liquids will follow soon! If every household in the UK refilled just one item per week, this would eliminate over 1.4 billion items of single-use packaging per year (Based on 2022 ONS figure of 28.2 million households in the UK). Congratulations to the brilliant Catherine Conway and the rest of the team at GoUnpackaged as another major UK supermarket (Ocado Retail) trials their reuse and refill scheme! 🎉 They're taking on the single-use plastic issue by introducing reusable bulk containers for everyday items like cereals, pasta, cleaning products, and personal care items. Here’s how it works: 1️⃣ Pre-filled containers are delivered with your usual online Ocado shop 2️⃣ When your next order arrives, simply return the empty containers to the driver 3️⃣ These containers are then cleaned, refilled, and sent out again. Each container can replace up to five single-use plastic packages and is designed to be reused 60 times or more! It will be interesting to see how Ocado Retail's online reuse scheme compares to Aldi UK's in-store trial that began in October 2023. Starting in August, UK consumers can receive staple items like Penne Pasta and Laundry Detergent in reusable containers delivered directly to their doors — at no extra cost! 💚 Ocado Retail, in partnership with the UK Refill Coalition, has launched an innovative online reusable packaging scheme. 🤔 Why? Consumer Demand! Based on a survey by Savanta & Ocado Retail, 72% of consumers are concerned about single-use packaging waste, 1 in 3 would prefer buying at retailers with refillable options and 73% would like more supermarkets to offer these options, especially for pantry staples. 👇 How? 1. Reusable container is pre-filled with the product 2. Ocado delivers the product 3. Consumer returns the empty container (alongside it's plastic shopping bags) with next delivery 4. Containers are hygienically washed and transported by GoUnpackaged 5. Containers are filled again by supplier And now repeat this process 60 times... representing the times these containers can be reused over and over again... 🔄

Frugalpac are making the news again this week, with Aldi UK launching their new own-label #paper #gin bottle! 😮 👏 This follows Aldi launching their paper #wine bottle and also flat #recycled PET wine bottle earlier this year. 🍾 The outer layer is made from 94% recycled paper board and it is lined with a food-grade pouch. Both are recyclable – the outer layer in your home recycling bin – and the inner pouch by returning to a flexible plastics collection point at most large supermarkets. ♻ More than 35 drinks producers selling in 25 countries have launched wines and spirits in the Frugal bottle. 🌎 👉 As outlined in IGD’s supermarket heatmap 34% of all supermarket packaging environmental impacts are from the beer, wine, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks categories. https://lnkd.in/e8KBB_kw #sustainable #packaging #environment #innovation

Return through your next online delivery 2️⃣ It’s being led by a #Coalition so developing a solution that could solve for the many not just one retailer or one manufacturer Each plastic #Reusable pack is designed to be #Reused at least 60 times 👍 So far the rice and pasta products have sold 29% more than their single use counterparts 🤩 The likely challenges 🤔 1️⃣ This is currently an online solution - how do we scale with shopper simplicity at the heart for instore 2️⃣ The supply chain complexity behind the scenes of this operation will be significant, including the responsibility and emissions of transporting packaging and washing But l’m going to pause here to celebrate what sounds like significant progress in the much needed space of #Reuse & #Refill. Overpackaging isn't just about plastic 📦 Take this pack of 8 yogurts from the Carrefour Belgium own brand for instance. The #cardboard is simply unnecessary. Proof be told: it was placed right next to other packs of 8 ... which had no cardboard around them. The question is : why do brands overwrap their products? 🤔 The answer is most of the time marketing-related. More space to attract consumers with messages such as "Lait français" or "Sans sucre ajouté". More space to add icons to make you well understand that those yogurts contain fruits, cow milk and are made with love ... in their large-scale production factory 🍎🐮🥛 . As if the prints on the yogurt themselves were not enough for consumers to understand what they were buying.
