Leverage sanctions strategically to channel business through American entities holding specific licenses, crowd out adversaries, gain leverage on the ground, and pave the way for long-term strategic change. 👇 I’m excited to share my latest policy article: Strategic Engagement in Venezuela: Advancing U.S. Interests under an America First Agenda. My piece explores a pivotal shift in U.S. policy toward Venezuela. The events of July 28 and their aftermath reveal a stark truth: the U.S. currently lacks meaningful leverage to influence Venezuela’s trajectory. To address this, the U.S. must consider pragmatic short-term compromises to build long-term strategic leverage. Sanctions are a hammer in America’s foreign policy toolbox: on their own, they are designed to break things, but when paired with a chisel (e.g., specific licenses for American businesses), they gain the precision to shape outcomes more effectively. Engaging Venezuela, despite its repressive regime, aligns with historical precedent. The U.S. has successfully engaged autocratic regimes such as Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, and Egypt to advance national interests while maintaining a focus on promoting democratic values and human rights over time. Engagement does not mean endorsement; it is a pragmatic step toward achieving strategic objectives. This article aims to spark a candid conversation about how the U.S. can navigate this complex yet critical relationship under an America First lens, balancing immediate needs with a commitment to long-term democratic and economic progress. I’d love to hear your thoughts on how the U.S. can recalibrate its approach to Venezuela. Let’s discuss! #ForeignPolicy #Venezuela #USDiplomacy #StrategicEngagement #PolicyInnovation

This was a great talk. I learned about the operation of bipartisanship in foreign relations and how some of it is driven by the institutional arrangements of Congress.
With foreign policy bipartisanship happening this week in real time on Capitol Hill, join Sarah Binder, Lester Munson, Daniel Silverberg, Lauren Bell, Katherine M. Robiadek, and me today (April 19) at 1 PM ET for an online roundtable on my book Bipartisanship and US Foreign Policy, sponsored by National Capital Area Political Science Association and American Political Science Association. In times of crisis, the Federalist paradigm has led to the development of original solutions to problems of domestic balances and global politics, as highlighted by Hamilton, Jay, and Madison in the Federalist Papers, and in Clarence Streit's Union Now. In this series of three articles, our research fellow Sofia Eliodori proposes an analysis of Federalism as a tool for foreign policy. Federalism affects foreign policy at many levels as it creates a bridge between the internal and external dimensions of political power balances, uniting domestic governance and Global Diplomacy. The analysis will look at the multidimensionality of the federal paradigm, emphasizing in particular how it affects two conceptual pairs: one that sees Citizen Participation on one side and Public Diplomacy on the other; the other that combines Sovereignty and Global Governance. https://lnkd.in/g2xic76j

We live in the interregnum, in the period in-between the end of one historical cycle and the beginning of a new one. Authoritarians of right/left-wing persuasions try to maintain the old order (and Make Modernity Solid Again), while liberal democrats do their best to make the transition from the interregnum to the new order more peaceful, although they have little understanding what that new order will be. Genuine ideological foundations of the new historical cycle will arise in opposition to the prevalent political systems of today, liberal democracy and autocracy including. To what extent are American ideas about foreign policy now polarized along partisan lines? How is polarization changing the foreign policy behavior of the US Congress and President? 'Polarization and US Foreign Policy'— edited by Gordon M. Friedrichs and Jordan Tama—explores these questions and more, bringing together existing knowledge as well as considering how the political dynamics and execution of US foreign policy may evolve in the years ahead.
