Great to see #AP4D's work referenced in this AAAS Science & Diplomacy paper from The Australian Academy of Science's Frances Separovic and Chennupati Jagadish, AC. "Science #diplomacy is an essential element to Australia’s desired 'whole of nation' approach to foreign policy, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region... However, Australia’s approach to science diplomacy more broadly is ad hoc, with limited evidence of nationwide coordination or a structured framework. It is in this context that national academies and their influence and capability to convene international partners can be leveraged as a key tool of Australia’s #statecraft." 🔗 Read the paper at https://lnkd.in/gr4GMR9Y. The AP4D paper 'What does it look like for Australia to take a whole-of-nation approach to international policy’ is the result of four months of extensive consultations with 113 experts from 93 organisations. It outlines lessons and models that can be replicated in putting a whole-of-nation approach to Australia’s international policy into practice. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gxriATJv.
Science Diplomacy in the Indo-Pacific: An Australian Perspective is a paper authored by Academy President Prof Chennupati Jagadish AC, and Academy Foreign Secretary, Prof Frances Separovic AO FAA in which they argue Australia needs a more coherent approach to science diplomacy. “Science diplomacy is no longer a series of bilateral and multilateral relationships; rather, it is a multi-lane and intersecting highway, and all countries and regions must navigate its complexities with a strategic mindset.” They highlight the Academy’s effort in assisting to bring together 60 Pacific scholars in Samoa in October 2023, where a historic agreement was reached to establish a Pacific Academy of Sciences. The Pacific Academy will be officially launched later this week. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gmYSz2xj See the entire issue here: https://lnkd.in/gF5yVdwx

It was an enriching experience to exchange ideas with esteemed panelists, including Dr. Neema Balolebwami Nelly and Dr. Meri Rosich, and explore how science diplomacy can drive social progress. The Summit provided a timely opportunity for diverse stakeholders from the realms of diplomacy and science to gather, share ideas, and co-create pathways for international collaboration. Given the complex challenges we face today, it is crucial to strengthen frameworks like science diplomacy to foster global solutions.
