There's a lot of discussion - rightly - about electric cars and the UK's public charging infrastructure, but there's comparatively little chat about home chargers. For those fortunate enough to have the ability to charge at home, they make EV ownership far easier, and substantially cheaper (after the not-inconsequential cost to buy and install, of course). So, the brilliant research by my colleague Claire Evans published today, alongside fantastic insight from the wider What Car? team, should help to make your decision-making process that little bit easier. https://lnkd.in/e-J2S7Hp

🚗 EVs are reshaping our roads and commercial property landscape. Today, they make up 8% of new car sales and the market's set to grow 18% annually for the next 4 years. By 2035, the government aims to phase out all new petrol cars 😮💨 This shift isn't just changing how we drive - it's transforming commercial real estate. Service stations face a stark reality: 80% could be unprofitable within a decade without adaptation. And for investors looking into how they can add value to their shopping centres, office buildings and warehouses, you might want to start thinking about how EV chargers could do that 👀. In recent years, the marketplace of electric vehicles (or “EVs”) has transformed: EVs are more available, affordable, and accessible than ever before. However, despite their numerous benefits, EVs are often subject to misconceptions that may deter potential buyers. With a rapidly evolving marketplace, it’s important to understand what developments have been made, and what benefits driving electric truly has to offer. Misconception #1: There’s nowhere to charge EVs. Fact: Electric vehicle charging infrastructure is abundant – and rapidly expanding! Columbia already has a number of electric vehicle chargers across town, with plans to build even more. The City of Columbia recently received a $3.6 million grant that will aid in the installation of 44 new EV charging stations across parking garages, the Daniel Boone Regional Library, and airport. EVs are also easily charged at home. While charging is less speedy this way, all EVs come with an adaptable charger that can be plugged into a standard outlet – the same kind you would use to charge your phone, television, or toaster! https://lnkd.in/gVD_HFkq

Despite the slower-than-anticipated transition to electric vehicles in the United States, Hawaii is an unexpected leader in EV adoption. Hawaii currently ranks fifth in overall EV adoption at 11.9% of new retail sales through February 2024. “We measure adoption relative to availability, meaning shoppers need availability of EVs that meet their needs … before they can even consider adopting,” said Elizabeth Krear, vice president of the electric vehicle practice at J.D. Power. “In California, the quantity of EVs is much higher than in Hawaii. But when consumers [in Hawaii] are given a viable option, 33% are choosing to buy the EV.” Learn more from CNBC:

⚡ Electric Vehicles are reshaping the American real estate landscape – and it’s only the beginning. ⚡ We are standing at one of the most significant inflection points in transportation history. While much of the conversation around EVs focuses on the cars themselves, it’s the impact on real estate and infrastructure that could truly redefine the future of American cities and suburbs. 🚗 But here’s the challenge: The number of public EV chargers is far behind the pace needed to meet the Biden administration’s goal of 500,000 chargers by 2030. As it stands, only 64,000 public chargers were available last year, and projections suggest we’ll only reach half the goal if current growth trends continue. 🔌 This shortfall creates a ripple effect far beyond transportation – think of retail, industrial, and multifamily real estate. From where charging stations will be located to how our highways and urban centers will evolve, the integration of EV infrastructure will impact property values, usage patterns, and site selection across the board. As someone who purchased a Tesla Model X in 2019, this is something I think about a lot. We’ve seen how changes in e-commerce have altered logistics real estate. Now, we’re about to witness how the EV revolution alters the infrastructure of America. It’s a reality people are only beginning to comprehend. Are you ready for this massive shift in real estate? I believe the time to start preparing is now. What will be the impact on
