🚀HackUO’s 24-Hour Innovation Marathon Was a Huge Success!🚀 In just 24 hours, 45 participants in 13 teams came together to innovate, build, and showcase solutions to real-world challenges. The creativity? Off the charts. The energy? Electric. As the first Hackathon at the Univeristy of Oregon since 2016, HackUO was a milestone event that rekindled an outlet for passion, creativity, and collaboration across campus. A Complex Solutions Are Out. Simple Solutions Are In. 🛠️ There’s something incredibly powerful about simplicity. In tech, we sometimes think that the more features, the more powerful the solution. But I’ve learned that simplicity is often what drives the most impactful change. I once worked with a business that had adopted an incredibly complex system. You know, the one that was supposed to solve every possible problem. But instead of solving problems, it created new ones: confusion, inefficiency, and frustration. The solution? We took a step back, stripped away what wasn’t needed, and focused on what actually worked. The result was a streamlined process that not only got the job done but did it faster and with less stress. Simplicity is underrated. It’s not about having all the features, it’s about having the right ones. Solutions that make sense for the people using them. Tools that solve real problems without creating unnecessary complexity. Simplicity is empowerment. It’s about giving people the tools they need without the overwhelm. It’s about creating tech that feels intuitive and natural.

Beautiful. a lot of people avoid building physical spaces and experiences like this because they think it's not needed, or they perceive such a business and craft as a status hit, until a bunch of smart and ambitious people do it and remind everyone that ultimately status, in a capitalist society, is a function of how useful you are and to how many people. I think a physical space hosting the people who are building the future is one of the ultimate value multipliers and therefore the sort of thing more smart & ambitious people should support/contribute to. I have a similar argument for personal growth/lifelong learning problem space, where historically smart & ambitious people have perceived it as a place where you can't generate & capture meaningful value, just because edutech hasn't succeeded visibly and therefore comes across as a status hit. Somehow people forget that Oxfords & Harvards & Stanfords were all built by people no smarter than you and me.
