This time last year, a lawyer shared a story that’s hard to forget. We were talking about holiday plans. I asked her what she had in store. Her answer? Work. Every. Single. Day. Including Christmas 🎅 Not for herself — so her team could take the time off and recharge. She was worried they were burning out. A corporate martyr? Maybe. An inspiring leader? Definitely 💪 But still, not the holiday cheer I was hoping to hear. Look, I get it. Not everyone gets the holidays off. Nurses, police, the team at Subway — these are essential services. But why was a General Counsel at a billion-dollar tech company redlining contracts while her kids opened presents? Because her team had been maxed out for too long. Not a week, not a month — a year. Maybe longer. It’s a tough situation, but one that doesn’t need to be the norm. At Goodlawyer, we provide in-house support to help relieve some of that pressure. We’re proud to be actively supporting dozens of incredible in-house teams — like those at Carfax and the Vancouver Whitecaps. My hope is that these mandates give leaders a chance to step back, recharge, and maybe even spread a little seasonal cheer. Happy holidays, everyone!

When you run out of your own fuel — it becomes really hard to lift your team and your business. Even when you feel like your intentions are good. I get it. I’ve been there in my GC life too. A little bit of talented legal support can make a massive difference in your operating level. And how you show up for others. Great reminder Grant

Wow, that's quite the story. Also, that Subway reference got me 😂 Good on you and Gideon to fit in some holiday card writing during a busy time of year!

This speaks to a real challenge for leaders with refreshing honesty. Shifting “work culture” will take time and likely require some extra effort. However, the more people step up to lead change, the faster we’ll get there—and the more we’ll all benefit. Thanks for sharing this!

Subway! 😅 Oftentimes, working through the holidays / weekends are a choice, to give yourself flexibility when last-minute things pop-up in a normal working day. But agree, everyone should shut down at least on Christmas.
