This year, I had a moment that fundamentally changed how I view my role at Goodlawyer. But first, let me set the stage. A year ago, Brett Colvin and I were huddled in his apartment kitchen on a cold evening, mapping the important themes required to move Goodlawyer forward. Stepping back from the refreshed org charts and ideal customer personas, it was clear that we’d have to challenge our team and ourselves to develop new skills and stretch into unfamiliar, even uncomfortable, domains. For me, that meant amplifying my work and the insights I’d absorbed through hundreds of discovery calls with GCs, CEOs, and CFOs. It meant creating and embracing a presence on LinkedIn—a daunting step for someone who prefers to operate behind the scenes. In January, I began this new ritual. I’ve consistently posted 1-2 times per week since. Now, to the perspective-changing moment. It happened at the Counselwell Summit in Toronto. The GC of one of Canada’s fastest-growing companies comes up to me. “JOSH!’ she said. “I’ve been following your posts—I’ve been meaning to ask you about…” No introductions, no small talk. Straight into the interesting, meaningful stuff that we seek from a community of peers, colleagues and friends. That wonderful interaction helped me see my role at Goodlawyer in a new light. It showed how putting myself out there helped to attract wonderful people into my life and Goodlawyer’s community. I’m very grateful for the connections I made with amazing lawyers, executives, and entrepreneurs this year. Your trust, support, and feedback are fuel, helping us grow and navigate the challenges and opportunities of building the most desirable way for lawyers to practice. Thank you. Love this story - it's been inspiring to read your posts all year. The benefit is both external (like jump-starting conversations with the GC at Counselwell's Summit), but it's also internal. Really nicely said, Joshua. Deeply connects. Consistently posting the last few years has allowed me to refine what I deeply care about and share that in a way that's real for me. And that energy is contagious. It builds community, connectivity and conversion in our purpose. Really glad you stepped into this in 2024. Looking fwd to seeing where you take it next year.
Congratulations, Joshua, on quite a year for you and Goodlawyer! You learned a lesson that took me far longer to catch onto—the value of truly putting yourself "out there" on LinkedIn; to be the real you. 2dSo much about this resonates Joshua!! 🤔 I too much prefer to operate behind the scenes but the community we’re building and the immediate dive into truly meaningful conversations that spark new ideas, new directions and new perspectives is SO refreshing!!! 🤩😎 I never really felt comfortable in the light small talk networking environments, and what finally got me comfortable building this LinkedIn presence was realizing it’s a shortcut to get down to it and solve some problems with people who already know what you’re about…no time to waste, let’s just GET TO IT!! 🤓🙌🏼
