Apparently International Plant Appreciation Day is a thing and its today! And why not, so have a great day on this lovely Spring day appreciating your plants and with the lovely weather many of us will be turning our attention to our gardens. But please be aware of what issues there may be in making any changes to gardens of rented properties. Unfortunately, garden-related issues are cited in nearly a fifth of all Tenancy Deposit Scheme disputes where a deduction of the held deposit is made, so it is important to avoid any surprises. At Pennington we work closely with our landlords and tenants to ensure that no changes being considered by tenants are made without the landlord’s permission. We also understand that tenants are keen to make the property their home and investing time and potentially their own funds, for non-essential or cosmetic changes, can mean a longer-term commitment they have which can often suit all parties. The way we work is to always get any agreement in writing, however small the changes may be as it will always help to avoid any issues down the line. Most landlords are supportive of work in the garden, as it shows the place is being well looked after and enjoyed – but getting this in writing is important due to the subjective nature of how a garden is kept. At Pennington, our team is on hand to fully manage and advise on these matters, and regular inspections also help to avoid any surprises and ensure that the property and garden is all being kept in the best possible way and any thorny issues are avoided.

Watching the press and public respond to the opening of PDX's new terminal has been so rewarding. In 2021, when I began helping Port of Portland with storytelling around PDX Next, I thought, cool client! But what do I know about airports? So far, I've learned about: • The innovative possibilities of mass timber • The promises and challenges of sustainable forestry in the Northwest • The groundbreaking work Northwest tribes are doing to restore their sovereign lands • Local businesses finding gorgeous new uses for lumber waste and small hardwood trees • What the heck a ground-source heat pump is (this took several interviews) • How massive projects like PDX Next can help small businesses scale up and ensure local BIPOC- and women-owned businesses share in the prosperity There's still 18 months of construction left, but I hope you enjoy the very cool architecture, art, and food on your next visit to PDX, knowing that the behind-the-scenes story may be even more impressive. www.pdxnext.com

We have partnered with Plant One CIC re-aligning our commitment to tree planting and the environment around us. Plant One just felt like a really good fit for a partnership, with a core focus on restoring the Celtic rainforest and working with landowners to plan and deliver habitat creation. The benefits are far reaching, with the ability of woodlands to lock up carbon. Our recent team away day included a presentation from Carl Rowlinson, the founder of Plant One. It was a really engaging and powerful presentation, one that had many of our team asking questions. We’ll be joining Carl and his team in Cornwall this year, to plant tree ourselves and learn more about our heritage as a woodland nation. Here’s Carl’s thoughts on why Plant One’s work is so pertinent. “Britain was once a wooded isle, with over 98% of the land covered in trees. But now only 2% of that ancient wildwood survives. Cultural amnesia means we have forgotten our woodland past but we are people of the woods. Our fates are linked, ensuring the survival of our woodlands and trees is imperative to our future.” If you are a local business keen to partner with a local provision of tree planting for offsetting and commitment to the planet, we’d highly advise chatting with Carl and his team.
