We are pleased to announce #OpenRivers Issue 25 | Rivers & Borders featuring work from Tim Hannigan, Vanessa Lamb, Daphne Giannoulatou, Michael Johnston, Ph.D., stefan lovgren, Zali Fung, and more! "The articles in this issue grapple with the complexity of rivers and borders in myriad ways. They draw attention to the harm these borders perpetuate, but also to the threads of connection they enable. The articles speak of historic conceptions, contemporary conditions, and future imaginings. They push for social awareness, reconfiguration of policy, and transformative engagements with place." https://openrivers.umn.edu #RiverTamar #RioGrande #amistadreservoir #bucksportsc #salween #mekongriver #severnriver #floatzilla #tugofwarfestival #quadcities #riversandborders #desertandwater #thegreatdisplacement

This week we are talking about the different grass types and how to encourage the finer grasses. Very much like weeds, coarse grasses survive in tougher conditions and once they get hold of the lawn, they can cause a lot of disruption. It has been known for people to get on their hands and knees to cut out the offending grass and this remains a viable option. But there are also other things that you can do and regular cutting is one of them. We would recommend at least weekly cuts in the growing season, although when we do enjoy some heat waves it is best to stop cutting altogether. The reason for this is that grass is 85% water and if cut frequently and correctly ie just taking the tip off, it will work to re-fill its water tank and thus stay healthy. If cut too short, then especially when it is hot and dry, it will not get a water supply and will start to yellow instantly. This is probably the most helpful tip to keep a healthy lawn and contrast that to the common practice of 'cutting it when I can or when the weather allows me' is a big shift. It is time to STOP your house/foundation from moving. Ther longer it is neglected the worse it will get. Don't jump into buying piers. They are usually not the answer early on. The building is likely moving due to the expansive soil. Piers are not the long-term answer. Contact me I can help.
