[Debating]   In the 21st century, matters of defense, strategy, cybersecurity, and asset safety are not solely the concern of the armed forces. In an ever-evolving environment, national leaders of industry such as those in TotalEnergies are also exposed to these issues.   In order to build upon the joint debate module held with TotalEnergies in November, the officers from the École de guerre Debate Program continued their exchange with the executives for #Cybersecurity, #Security, #Strategy and #TalentDevelopment, sharing insights and building upon each other’s invaluable experiences in these matters.   The commandant of the École de guerre and the head of TotalEnergies’ High Potential Program Valerie Callaud presented the stakes and guidelines of their respective curriculums in the optics of developing high-potential talent, highlighting the numerous overlaps and intersections.    Ouafa Kourdaa, TotalEnergies’ VP for Corporate Strategy elaborated on how this talent training translates into the long-term strategic planning and foresight needed for an international energy company tackling matters such as climate change.    jean-dominique nollet, TotalEnergies’ head of cybersecurity and Denis Favier, head of personnel and asset safety discussed how the private sector approaches matters of risk and security. Discipline isn't something you find, it's a product of deliberate effort. At sea, where even the smallest of tasks can mean real danger to life and limb, is where I began to grasp this reality. There can be no compromises in the ocean. The importance of self-control & cooperation, and seeing the forest for the trees is paramount to your survival. Those principles accompanied me throughout my military career. What it means to commit oneself to a higher cause, to put the well-being of others ahead of one's own interests, was something I witnessed first hand there. I learnt the importance of discipline and habits through coming to terms with the fact that whilst Explanation Demonstration and Imitation as a skill development and delivery method is effective, the operator on the end of the learning needs to also understand the greater mission in order to truly be able to deliver on the commanders intent. The lessons I learnt there accompanied me when I returned to civilian life. The standards of corporate leadership are similar to the self-disciplined routines I developed while serving. Honesty, responsibility, and dedication to the people you help are the keys to success in both fields. I wholeheartedly support veterans in security because of this belief. The habits and discipline they develop during their time in service are just as important as their skill when it comes to protecting communities. The meaning of working under pressure, maintaining a standard of excellence, and prioritising the safety of others are all things that veterans are familiar with.
