Lily Ledbetter: A Pioneer for Pay Equity
Lily Ledbetter was an American worker who became a symbol for the fight for pay equity between men and women. She worked at Goodyear Tire & Rubber for nearly 30 years, starting in 1979. Despite her long tenure and consistent performance, she discovered that male colleagues with similar jobs were earning significantly more than her.
The Ledbetter Fair Pay Act:
In 2009, after retiring, Ledbetter filed a lawsuit against Goodyear, alleging that she had been subjected to pay discrimination. However, the Supreme Court ruled against her, stating that she had filed her lawsuit too late.
In response to this decision, Congress passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in 2009. This law extended the statute of limitations for filing pay discrimination lawsuits, allowing workers to file a claim within 180 days of receiving their last paycheck, even if the discriminatory pay practices occurred years earlier.
Ledbetter's Legacy:
Lily Ledbetter's case and the subsequent passage of the Fair Pay Act had a significant impact on the fight for pay equity. Her story highlighted the systemic nature of pay discrimination and inspired countless women to speak out against unfair treatment in the workplace.
