GPS-Denied Navigation for Drones & Airborne Systems Inspired by Fingerprint Technology 💡 https://hubs.la/Q02Z4g2v0 Advanced Navigation and MBDA will collaborate on breakthrough resilient navigation technology to provide absolute positioning for manned and unmanned aerial systems operating in GPS-denied environments. The companies will co-develop a solution using NILEQ's patent-pending technology which is underpinned by the use of novel neuromorphic sensors to derive and match terrain fingerprints. Initially inspired by biological change detection processes, the sensing technology captures data of the changing terrain as an airborne system flies across it, and matches it to an existing database of the Earth’s surface.

Could military drones be controlled over 10 kilometers (~6 miles) using a high-bandwidth optical link via a tethered spool of optical fiber? This concept initially appears straight out of science fiction. However, Forbes recently reported that such a drone configuration has been tried in the field. A few thoughts from my end: -Surprising Weight: Consider this: a 10-kilometer bare single-mode fiber spool (9/125) weighs only around 6 pounds. That’s remarkably light and quite feasible for drone deployment. -Jamming Immunity: A physical cable optical control/data link cannot be jammed, providing a unique advantage in COMSEC (communication security). -Practical Challenges: -Terrain and Trajectory: The system faces significant limitations related to terrain and trajectory. Imagine if the fiber were to catch on something - a tree branch, for example. -Lack of Environmental Robustness: Bare fiber lacks a protective jacket. Adding one would significantly increase weight and is not feasible for this application. -Mechanical Fragility: The delicate mechanical/optical connections pose another challenge, especially at the attachment points. Still, the idea is intriguing. Imagine obtaining high-definition reconnaissance video from a drone in a hostile E&M jamming environment where you couldn’t do otherwise.
