Yesterday Wellteam CEO Troy Flower presented at a UniSA symposium on wellbeing. The key message he wanted to get across is that wellbeing and wellness are not useful terms. We use them to describe an industry and maybe our role in an industry but we don't use them in everyday life to describe our actions. "I'm off to the park to do some wellbeing honey. I'll be back once I've had my dose of wellness." Instead, we need to focus on what drives wellness and wellbeing... Habits. Good healthy habits increase our feelings of calmness, confidence, clarity, more energy, self-control. Un-helpful habits can have the opposite effect. By their very nature, habits creep into our lives slowly. There's a reward for every good and bad habit... often we don't know it. Often the reward for bad habits is instantaneous and often a biological reward. Eg sugar consumption. The reward for good habits is often less direct, slower, harder to define. That's where discipline and accountability come in. If we want to change things fast, we need to reward the positive habits as quickly as we can and build accountability mechanisms. This is ultimately what we do at Wellteam. We make healthy habits stick. We do that through introducing specific hacks that can be turned into habitual behaviour. We do it in the right order and at the right time to elicit the best result. We use AI tools to boost instant reward and a community to drive accountability.
