I didn’t grow up celebrating Kwanzaa, but as I’ve gotten older, the principles behind it have really resonated with me—and they inspire the way I show up for my community and my aspirations for the future. Kwanzaa, celebrated from December 26th to January 1st, is a holiday created to honor African heritage and culture. It’s a time to reflect on the values that uplift and unite us, focusing on community, purpose, and growth. Each day of Kwanzaa highlights one of its seven principles: 🕯️ Unity (Umoja): Coming together as a family, community, and beyond. 🕯️ Self-Determination (Kujichagulia): Being proud of who we are and defining our own paths. 🕯️ Collective Work & Responsibility (Ujima): Lending a hand to build and uplift each other. 🕯️ Cooperative Economics (Ujamaa): Supporting each other’s growth and success. 🕯️ Purpose (Nia): Staying focused on the bigger picture for our community. 🕯️ Creativity (Kuumba): Finding ways to leave the world better than we found it. 🕯️ Faith (Imani): Believing in ourselves and our ability to create change. These ideas are so universal and powerful—and they’ve helped me think more intentionally about how I can contribute to my community in meaningful ways.
