As the Education Officer of ESN Italia (Erasmus Student Network), I’m excited to attend The Class Foundation’s Student Living Italy event.This event is pivotal in addressing the pressing issues surrounding the growth of international student numbers in Italy and the broader landscape of student living. 📈 Globally, higher education enrollment is expected to reach 380 million by 2030. Europe, home to over half of the top 1000 universities, remains a key destination. Despite Italy’s popularity with nearly 50 million tourists in 2022, international students make up less than 3% of our student body. Additionally, only 4% of our student population has access to purpose-built accommodations. 🇮🇹 However, Italy is emerging as a top search destination for international students. Their presence brings invaluable contributions beyond finances, enriching our communities with talent and driving infrastructure improvements. 💡 The Student Living Italy event will explore these issues and develop a roadmap for success. It will gather government officials, universities, investors, and operators to create a collaborative action plan. 👥 For ESN Italy, attending this event is essential. It aligns with our mission to support international students and to overcome the barriers for the internationalization of Higher Education. ✨ Standing right behind Jorge Paulo Lemann, and next to Brazilian Senator Cid Gomes – not an everyday kind of picture, for sure. ☺️ Last month’s 3-day event at the Universität Zürich was a beautiful experience for me, both as a professional and a Brazilian. Supported by the Fundação Lemann, this gathering of great minds from both countries 🇨🇭🇧🇷 explored educational practices from Switzerland’s vocational training system, discussing how they could be adapted to Brazil, considering its educational issues. 🎯 Strategic reflections: - Curriculum adjustments - Public-private partnerships - Career guidance initiatives 💡 Some of my takeaways: - It’s never only about education. It’s about society and values. Where do we want “work” to be placed in society? What do we envision for education 50 years from now? - "Work is structuring in society." - Short-term plans for education do not work. - Social responsibility in Switzerland is a strong element. In vocational education/dual system, the student’s teacher plays a big part in making this system work. It’s not just a job; it’s a social responsibility. - The bridge between the productive sector and education works very well in Switzerland (and it is a key success factor) and not so much in Brazil. - Bringing the experience of work/ industry into the lower secondary school could be an interesting approach. As a Brazilian, these discussions really hit home for me.
