By the time this post goes live, I will be on a series of flights bound for my hometown in Southern Italy. The trip was not planned, but due to a combination of circumstances, I decided to buy a last-minute ticket (which costs as much as a trip to the moon) and set off. Today is "Ferragosto" ("Summer Height Day"), one of the most cherished Italian holidays. The fun part is that the height of summer has long passed, and while the summer spirit has almost faded in other countries, we Italians celebrate our own summer holiday. After all, we are Italians; we must be creative in some ways. This year marks for me the 23rd anniversary of living overseas, and in a few years, I will have spent half my life away from my home country. It has been a terrific and exciting journey, and I don't see the end approaching yet. However, as I age, I have become more sensitive to spending traditional holidays with my family and lifelong friends, as opposed to taking off during Thanksgiving, Lunar New Year, and similar holidays. Being on holiday when others are not, does not result in a fulfilling experience. Sharing the holiday spirit with your family and friends is paramount. With no delays, I will be having Ferragosto lunch with all my extended family, from my eighty-year-old father to my teenage nieces. It is one of those small things that make a big impact; I would go as far as saying it is one of the things that make life worth living. There is only one irreversible commodity in life, which is time. Don’t waste it.

Showa Day (Showa no Hi): Celebrated on April 29th, this holiday pays tribute to the birthday of Emperor Showa, who reigned over Japan from 1926 to 1989. 2. Constitution Memorial Day (Kenpō Kinenbi): Observed on May 3rd, this holiday commemorates the establishment of Japan's post-war constitution in 1947. 3. Greenery Day (Midori no Hi): Previously marked on April 29th, Greenery Day has been moved to May 4th. It serves as a day for appreciating nature and expressing gratitude for its blessings. 4. Happy winter solstice and happy holidays from D’light 😊 Winter in the Nordics is very challenging with its very short days, however we have had quite few days this winter with sunshine, with beautiful colors that mesmerized the sky. I recently came across the term ‘skycology’, where scientists are attempting to understand the effect of sky on our biological health and well-being more in details. This is not new, but the term itself was new to me. We know that having a view out from the buildings we occupy is important for our health, and with our fast-paced lifestyle, we need our homes to be well-daylight, and all rooms to have direct light through windows, to regulate our circadian rhythms and help us in de-stressing. This is of course a reflection towards the recent changes to the local regulations in Sweden, where the daylight assessment criteria are changing from July 2025. However, I am hopeful that by continuously bringing the benefits of daylight and view out, and how that reflects on long term investments, especially considering the need for more flexible buildings in the future, we can continue to build beautiful homes for us and for the future generations to come. My Scandinavian Era It is likely that this will be my final trip to Denmark for an extended period. I will miss savoring my preferred kyllingespyd (which took me several months to master the pronunciation) during my morning commute from Kobenhavn Main Station. It is a must-try delicacy; simply visit a local Danish 7/11 store to acquire it. If there’s one thing worth highlighting from the Scandinavian era, it’s this powerful concept of Hygge. In essence, Hygge is about creating a cozy and comforting atmosphere. It involves turning off the lights, snuggling under a blanket, or sitting near a fire. It’s about choosing peace by agreeing to disagree, feeling gratitude by savoring the moment, and being mindful of the present. Coincidentally, it reminds me of an Ilonggo term, my native language, which is katawhay. Katawhay is a noun that describes a state of tranquility, free from any opposition or worry. However, when I think of katawhay, it contrasts with a warm blanket or a cozy fire. Instead, it evokes the image of a nipa hut nestled beside a beach, surrounded by coconut trees and enveloped by a refreshing breeze from the Pacific Ocean.. Perhaps the almost identical concepts made me feel at ease in Denmark occasionally. Although it’s still far from the tropics of the eastern hemisphere, it somehow feels like home. After all, in theory, home is a feeling. This holiday season, let’s try to focus on the things that unite us instead of what divides us. By acknowledging our shared traits, we can tap into the warmth and comfort of “hygge” and “katawhay.” Happy Holidays!

🎄 Have you booked your next adventure? Last year, I took Sydney to the real Lapland. ❄️ It was -27°C and packed with activities, excitement, and hardly any sleep! We glimpsed the northern lights through an iPad at midnight, ate all the stodgy food, and froze our noses, toes, and fingers. (Pro tip: Frozen nose hairs? Quite the experience!) But do you know what I loved most about it? It was a complete switch-off. I hardly looked at my phone—not just because it was too cold to take my mittens off, but because I was fully present. So here’s the question: Do you take all your holiday leave? And if you run your own business, do you let yourself completely switch off? When I work with my clients, the first thing I ask them to do is book their downtime first. Family time, social events, and holidays aren’t luxuries—they’re priorities. Because when you plan for rest, connection, and adventure, you’re building the foundation for abundance. ✨ So, here’s your gentle reminder: Have you carved out time to be with the people who bring you joy? The new holidays August is traditionally the month when the country takes a break for the famous summer holidays. But what has changed? Today, we live in new realities and concepts of holidays. It’s increasingly common to take “holiday days” throughout the year, avoiding the high season (July and August) when everything is more congested and expensive, and personalized service is lacking. What’s more, health and leisure now go hand in hand. We want moments to relax, disconnect, and celebrate the best of life with those we love or in our marvelous solitude. Needs and realities vary between couples, families, friends, and solo travelers, but some motivations are common: a) Rest, relaxation, and a good night’s sleep b) Unique experiences that allow us to disconnect from the world and connect with our life’s priorities: ourselves and our loved ones. Examples include specialized retreats and recreational or holistic activities that promote regeneration. c) Returning to the “homeland,” experiencing the countryside, the forest, the beach, the river, and celebrating the “pilgrimages and festivals” of our grandparents’ lands. d) Savour the local Portuguese cuisine and wines e) Playing sport f) Take part in traditional games g) Getting to know new cultures and acquiring new knowledge and perspectives It’s worth reflecting on the “new holidays” and the new needs, considering the new offer, climate change, sustainability, and the true essence of each one of us.
