Reflecting on First 10 Months in 2024 with Amazon Box Truck Relay The first 10 months of this year have been challenging for my business, especially compared to previous years. The load availability and rates in Amazon Relay have been significantly lower, making it tough to maintain consistent operations. It’s been a time of adjustment, navigating unexpected cancellations, lower rates, and longer gaps sometimes weeks between loads. However, last week showed a glimmer of hope. For the first time in two years, I received some attention and engagement from Amazon Relay management, which hopefully will lead to more positive changes moving forward. Here’s to staying resilient and looking forward to what’s next. Persistence is key, and I’m optimistic that with open communication and continued effort, we’ll see improvements. #logistics #transportation #AmazonRelay #boxtruck #resilience

In 2019, FedEx cut ties with Amazon due to concerns over Amazon's growing delivery ambitions. However, despite FedEx and UPS both working to manage and contain Amazon’s growing market share, Amazon has become the largest US parcel delivery company by volume, surpassing FedEx several years ago. It now seems FedEx has shifted gears and is taking the “if you can’t beat them, join them” approach. According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, there were discussions between FedEx and Amazon in 2023 regarding a collaboration for handling returns. However, Amazon also has its own strategic interests. Around the same time FedEx and Amazon were supposedly discussing a returns management partnership, Amazon introduced a fee for returns at UPS stores. Furthermore, UPS announced their intent to acquire Happy Returns around the same time, meaning they have more leverage in the returns market. For anyone who loves strategy, the parcel delivery industry is a fascinating case study. #ecommerce #logistics #amazon

Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are shaping the supply chain landscape, driving volume growth in the business-to-consumer delivery space. Their deliveries, often more profitable for carriers than large-scale customers, are in high demand amid market declines and in-sourcing trends. Both UPS and FedEx are vying for a larger share of the SMB segment by offering initiatives to meet their specific needs. UPS emphasizes its integrated network and improving customer service capabilities, leveraging technology like AI-enabled chatbots for quick responses. FedEx, through its network overhaul and the introduction of the fdx platform, aims to streamline interactions and provide real-time intelligence for SMBs. However, competition is fierce, with Amazon emerging as a significant challenger with its in-house logistics capabilities. The U.S. Postal Service and alternative carriers are also intensifying efforts to attract SMB shippers, highlighting the dynamic nature of the market. As SMBs continue to drive volume growth in the delivery space, carriers must innovate and tailor their offerings to meet the evolving needs of this crucial customer segment. #SupplyChain #SmallBusinesses #Logistics

All roads probably lead back to USPS in the longterm parcel volume game with current infrastructure, right? UPS MI, FedEx SmartPost and DHL Ecom have heavy share of volume for the first mile, the post office is still handling all these packages. Feels like USPS is playing the long game here. Is there anyone other than Amazon with the footprint that can actually compete longterm and sustainably? If a big VC-backed option comes into play, it’s hard to imagine them having staying power without proper infrastructure in place ahead of time. The cash burn required to compete and win significant volume share completely away from the post office is huge. Are the regional door-to-door parcel solutions big enough (even consolidated to a single entity) to compete for major volume share? Can UPS and FedEx invest to take over the final mile for services beyond their current ground-level programs to compete for lighter package volume at competitive rates with the Post Office? Without any real, longterm final mile competition in place for the small parcel shipping game, wouldn’t monopolization concerns grow for small parcel shippers? Thoughts? I’d love to hear the perspective of others on this. #shipping #usps #ups #dhl #ecommerce #amazon #parcel #smallparcel
