It must be nearly spring. The snow has melted, MARCH MADNESS is here (we're going to the Elite Eight in Detroit in about a month), I'm getting my short haircut today, and we're seeking candidates for a variety of summer internships across our business. The one closest to my heart is a software engineering role with a focus on Python, located in our gorgeous Chicago office, for 10 weeks, from June 3rd to August 9th. Job link in the comments. Did you know approximately 40% of all internships in the U.S. are unpaid? Seems to me paying interns is a simple missing piece in the bringing dignity to internships puzzle. This is especially true when benefits - like PTO, health insurance, 401(k) matching, among others - are not even on the table. Jane Street on the other hand pays its interns extremely well. How well? This week the Financial Times had an article titled "Jane Street interns make more than Keir Starmer and Jay Powell" with this quote: "There are also ads for a software engineering internship and a machine learning researcher summer gig that also pay $250k a year (pro-rata’d, it comes in at ca $21,000 a month)." $21,000 per month? Yes. That is dignity. I acknowledge Jane Street for doing this for its interns. Ethar Hussein was laid off from her summer Software Engineering Internship this week just after starting. She moved all the way to SF for her internship from her home city of Urbana, IL, where she attends the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Two days ago, she reached out and asked for my help. Students have been THROUGH it this year. Companies have put students through the wringer with insanely long, arduous interview processes, only to rescind offers weeks before start dates or lay off their entire class of interns in their first or second week. So, I'm lending my platform to Ethar with the goal of helping her find a last-minute summer internship! Ethar is one of the most impressive and qualified candidates I've ever met, and her work ethic speaks through her achievements. She's a Congressional App Challenge Winner, a Cozad New Venture Challenge award winner, and a TreeHacks (Stanford) Competition Winner. She previously interned at Discover Financial Services and has done research at UIUC, Google, AI4ALL, and Cornell University! And my fav, she was a Lead TA for none other than Girls Who Code! IMO: internships and entry-level assessments should focus on foundational and key concept questions rather than complex algorithmic challenges. Testing problem-solving skills is valuable, but for entry-level and internship roles, it shouldn’t be the primary determinant. These candidates should be evaluated on their ability to write clean code, understand core programming principles, apply design principles, and implement simple algorithms or programs. Interns and entry-level applicants need opportunities to step into professional environments to learn from mentors without feeling overwhelmed by intense technical screenings before they’ve had a chance to grow. Complex algorithmic questions are better suited for junior and senior roles, where advanced problem-solving is more applicable. #softwareengineer #assessments
