What if AI wasn't only risk/problem/danger, but also powerful tool to address the problem we already faced as well as the ones that it itself is creating? Have a look at this essay and stack of videos that dive into the matter of AI, energy, and climate. I’ve refererred to this provocative session before. Here Joel Makower, who opened the conversation, provides a cogent summary that I hope entices you to read Peter Leyden’s summary and watch the videos he’s curated. There’s plenty to be concerned about with regard to AI, but there’s enormous potential too (which has been my own experience so far). And guess what: they’re not going away. So we worldchangers need to understand them, and know how to use them in support of the things we care about and #TheWorldWeWant.
Writer, speaker, advisor and entrepreneur on sustainable business strategy and communications, climate tech and beyond
Last month, I had the great privilege of participating in a fascinating event on "How AI Could Supercharge Progress in Solving Climate Change," produced by my friend Peter Leyden. I was one of 10 speakers who gave ~5-minute presentations, along with Saul Griffith Himanshu Gupta John Picard and others. Mine was a sort of level-set, helping #climate professionals understand the potential of #AI, and AI professionals understand the full range of #climatesolutions that AI could accelerate. And yes, we acknowledged the many emerging challenges AI presents, from creating autonomous self-willed actors, to creating deep fakes, to its prodigious appetite for energy and water — all of which we ignore or trivialize at our peril. But the evening was devoted to AI's potential to accelerate progress on all of the things we need to be transforming to address the #climatecrisis at the scale, scope and speed that's required: our energy systems, transportation and mobility systems, buildings and cities, materials and manufacturing, food systems and much more. I'd encourage you to read Pete Leyden's terrific summary article, and to click through to some of the short videos. https://lnkd.in/gJVDJT8p

I just published my latest in-depth essay that synthesizes what about 250 experts and innovators learned in our event in San Francisco last month focused on how AI could accelerate progress in solving the great challenge of climate change. We had a dozen of them with expertise in climate or AI or both give their answers, which we videoed with a sophisticated 3-camera shoot. The essay integrates all the contributions with the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. But the essay also links to the talks of each of the speakers that can be viewed in their entirety on our Reinvent Futures Youtube channel. The conversation was sobering when we faced up the realities of the climate challenge but inspiring as well because AI is already breaking new ground on what's possible - and the potential impact of this new general purpose technology may be what humans need to finally pull this off. Read the piece to understand why. We really had some amazing minds in the mix like: Saul Griffith, Jef Caers, Himanshu Gupta, Anna-Katrina Shedletsky, John Picard, Apoorv Bhargava, Matthew Kropp, Vijay Gadepally, Joel Makower, Michael Marano, and Harnish Jani. This kind of important and complex conversation could not be done without pulling together the networks and resources from our key partners BCG X and SHACK15, as well as sponsors who are on the forefront of Generative AI: Google Cloud, Writer, Adobe, Radium, and B Capital . Thanks for making this event and the ongoing series The AI Age Begins be all it can be. And a special thanks goes out to my partner at Reinvent Futures and co-host Joe Boggio. #climate, #AI, #cleanenergies, #GenAI, #GenerativeAI,

So the answer to the climate disaster created by AI is to invest in more AI?
Eric Schmidt says we’re not going to meet our climate targets, so we must put all our energy into improving AI and hope it solves the problem for us. He’s part of a growing chorus of tech billionaires openly admitting they’ll sacrifice the climate on the altar of their AI ambitions. #techindustry #climate #climatechange #ai #artificialintelligence #generativeai #ericschmidt
