There are signs for hope and optimism for restaurants in Chicago's downtown. Quite a few establishments see guest and revenue numbers back to 2019 or even higher. A combination of increased workers returning to their offices, more visitors coming to Chicago, more favorable lease terms, and modified operations with a focus on more profitable days and hours is helping the restaurants to perform better. The numbers confirm the positive momentum: The amount of space occupied by downtown restaurants ticked up slightly to 1.27 million, with especially the Fulton Market neighborhood being a growth engine with increasing its space devoted to food and beverage to 515,000 square feet, up from 430,000 two years earlier. Additionally, downtown foot traffic is up 8% over the last 12 months, and downtown's resident population reached 46,000 in 2023, an increase of almost 9% since 2020. Thank you to all the outstanding organizations supporting this positive momentum for Chicago's downtown, including the Chicago Loop Alliance, The Magnificent Mile® Association, the Illinois Restaurant Association, the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association, World Business Chicago, Choose Chicago, and many more.

Love this article. One that's close to my heart, given most things that are planned for Crewe seem to go "sideways" mostly due to them being run by people with very little idea what the people of Crewe actually want, and have never lived there themselves. The new market at least is leading the way. Check out the full article and let me know what you think. WeGoAgain
Welcome to the heart of Crewe – where shopping, dining, working, and playing converge in a symphony of community spirit and vibrant energy. Crewe Market Hall has transcended its traditional roots to become more than just a market, it’s a a cool new place to be. Step inside and you’ll be surprised. Gone are the days of uninspired market halls – Crewe Market Hall is now a bustling, dynamic space that pulses with life and excitement. Since its grand reopening in 2021, the market has become a magnet for locals and visitors alike, drawing crowds with its diverse mix of independent businesses and lively atmosphere. It will be interesting to see how New Yorkers react when in November all the dining sheds are taken down for the winter, and they once again, for the first time in years, see our streets open and uncluttered as they were before Covid. Will it make people less enamored of the sheds once they realize what was lost to enable them? It will also be interesting to see how the restaurants react. Will they find that the sheds were not essential to their bottom line (especially factoring in the cost of taking down the sheds, paying 5 months of storage and putting them back up every year)?

(More rules...) Why Some of New York’s Snazziest Dining Sheds Are Headed for the Dumps Soon, dining sheds around the city will be dismantled — no matter how attractive they are. In 2022, Mayor Eric Adams announced a permanent outdoor dining program — with a new set of rules. Structures on the sidewalk cannot be fully enclosed, and dining on the street will not be possible in the winter, from Nov. 30 to March 31. Businesses must apply for a license to offer outdoor dining; the fee is $1,050 for a sidewalk cafe or a roadway cafe and $2,100 if applying for both — and is good for four years. Additionally, there is a public hearing fee, a security deposit and a revocable consent fee, which varies depending on how much space the restaurant will be using and its location. The high-rent areas of Manhattan are the most expensive. Restaurants already participating in the city’s outdoor dining program must apply for a new setup by Aug. 3 — or take their dining sheds down. By November, all of the original dining sheds must be dismantled.

It seems that something is happening in Farringdon... When three separate clients mention, out of the blue, that they’ve been in Farringdon recently and they think it could be a spot to explore for their concept, you have to stop and think for a second about whether a trend is emerging. The arrival of Crossrail has provided property people with lots of conversations about the potential of this area for years. High-rise offices were consented and constructed, and high-profile chefs took up their starting positions (remember Jason Atherton’s Sosharu, anyone?), but with delays to the Elizabeth Line, followed by Covid, Farringdon seemed to be facing a very bleak future, until now... The arrival of Brutto, Bouchon Racine and Restaurant St Barts have made the area a hotspot for foodies, and when you add in the delights of nearby Exmouth Market a few minutes’ walk away, with Quality Chop House, Moro and Morchella (one of onepoint2’s most recent deals, and already winning the hearts of London’s top chefs), this is perhaps one of London’s most exciting corners for dining. If you want to join them, you should probably speak to a well-connected property agent who can tell you what’s what. #property #leisure #hospitality #opportunitiesunlocked #onepoint2

New York City's new outdoor dining program, "Dining Out NYC," is set to reshape the city's dining experience with stricter and more structured regulations compared to the pandemic-era setup. This initiative allows for year-round sidewalk dining and roadway dining from April to November, aiming to create a safer, cleaner, and more organized outdoor dining environment. The program, a collaboration between the city council, Mayor Eric Adams' administration, and the restaurant industry, introduces a more equitable fee structure, with costs varying based on location and setup size. Restaurant owners must adhere to specific design and location criteria, ensuring clear pathways and emergency access, while also incorporating rat-resistant and water-filled barriers for roadway setups. Applications for the program are expected to take up to six months for sidewalk cafes and five months for roadway cafes to process. Notably, the program mandates ADA compliance, sets precise distances from city infrastructure, and encourages transparent dining pavilions to enhance visibility. This transformation is part of New York City's effort to support local businesses and maintain vibrant public spaces, reflecting the city's adaptive response to the changing dynamics of urban dining. #DiningOutNYC #NYCOutdoorDining #UrbanDiningRevolution #NYCRestaurants https://lnkd.in/e6XjaJjJ
