If you think it's bad right now, imagine what it would be like having everything price controlled. We had to fight for everything, for example, everything being rationalized. You know, 6 year old child. I was trying to imagine what is it like because obviously there was no visual. After my conversation with Indy Rishi Singh on Political Hope, I began reflecting on how our rigid systems of governance might be fueling challenges in agriculture and beyond. Tools like Robert’s Rules of Order, while efficient, often stifle meaningful change and fail to address root issues like food crises and ecological decline. I find these types of meeting to be virtually useless and set up to direct power to the loudest in the room. Rather than bring everyone voice into.the room.
Indy shared some fascinating insights about the Sikh Misls, which governed 18th-century Punjab through a decentralized, collaborative model. I.had never learned this history and it really got my wheels grinding. Each Misl tailored its governance to local needs, allowing agriculture to thrive sustainably revenue systems like ghallabakhshi (crop sharing) and kankut (yield estimation) ensured fairness, while community collaboration supported shared efforts like irrigation and crop diversity. The flexibility of this system aligned governance with the land, creating resilience through connection to natural and social systems. Or US coop's are similar but I think most miss that true collaboration and management resources for the good of the region whole. I have seen it applied in some my families agriculture endeavors but it is rare in commodity high intensity production agriculture. This could be worth considering as one of the weak links that hurt agriculture.
This historical model reminded me that governance, like ecosystems, thrives on adaptability. The Misls protected regional autonomy while fostering collective strength, a stark contrast to today’s centralized systems that often ignore local realities. What if we adopted governance models that reflect the diversity of our land and people? The Founders designed a system meant to evolve, and perhaps the answers we need lie in revisiting adaptable, place-based systems—not just in how we farm, but in how we organize ourselves to meet today’s challenges.

Want to know what SME housebuilders must do?
We desperately need more smaller developers and SME housebuilders. The housing crisis will never be solved without them.
Things, particularly planning, finance and managing costs, have got so difficult that even the very biggest housebuilders (such as Barratt + Redrow) are having to consolidate.
…And the SME housebuilding industry has dwindled from approx 12,500 developers in 1988 to less than 2,000 today.
Yet, still some people think it’s easy and we’re all making fortunes. The evidence would suggest otherwise.
All developers (and it’s even more important for the smaller ones) have to be all over every detail of the process, then hope for a bit of luck as well!
