Should general contractors build a crew or hire subs? In my opinion, subs are a more intelligent choice Part of this is selfish; employees increased my stress level, and I did not need any more stress. My mindset was different when I hired subs for everything. Subs can be challenging to manage, that's true, but employees have their own management issues. Along with benefits, HR issues, payroll, and WC insurance. Subs are focused on their niche and get really good at their trade. To grow, I find more subs or help them grow with me. Bad sub? Don't hire them again; find a new one. Hiring and firing are expensive and can be legally complicated. I prefer to hire good managers; they manage subs, not the crew. I have gone as far as hiring out my project management to 1099 contractors by the job. Which do you prefer and why? #businessblueprint

A good contracting agency will either make or break an experience for you. I've never been shy from contract work, in fact it was because of a contract that I was able to get my foot in the door with The Home Depot The short term opportunity to prove myself under time constraints?!?! what a fun challenge! But having been in that world for some +8 years now, I can safely say, if your contracting agency doesn't have your back, YOU most certainly need too. Grill your contract agency just as much as you grill your hiring manager -what is the benefits package? -who can I call with issues/questions pertaining to HR -what's the usual turn around for business travel expenses?? it's meant to be a partnership, they are benefitting from YOUR brain just as much you are benefitting from their network

The number of companies that assign their HR/People function to someone in a finance, legal, or admin role still shocks me. Even more, I often see executives who oversee HR with zero experience in the function. You would never assign the tasks of a CFO, CTO, or CMO to another team so why is it okay to task someone with no subject matter experience to oversee the most critical assets - aka the people! - of your company? This is where fractional HR comes in. If companies can't afford a full time HR pro, hire an experienced leader ( 🙋🏻♀️ ) for a fraction of the cost to spot issues before they arise and to leverage their experience to mitigate risk, optimize processes and costs, and to create a better experience for the entire team. Your people are worth the investment. www.jackyturnbull.com ***** Editing to add a clarifying point to my post because I received a note from someone whom I greatly respect sharing a differing perspective (thank you!). I do not mean that an HR function shouldn't report into another functional leader such as a CFO, GC, COO, etc. In my career thus far, finance and legal teams are usually where I find my strongest partners, champions, and coaches. HR reporting into these leaders can be beneficial in many ways. My thought is about companies which don't have an HR department and instead assign people-related tasks to their payroll team, attorneys, executives, or receptionists (as a few examples) without giving those people the resources to be successful. Those are opportunities where I think it's beneficial to bring in fractional HR to help provide expertise to those who are learning HR as a function of their expanded role.

Hey folks! If you're #hiring, please keep in mind that there are LEGAL differences between hiring an employee who is on your payroll and a consultant - who is not. If you're looking for someone who will work a specific set of hours during the day, you should be hiring an employee, not a consultant. If you're looking for someone who can rapid-fire respond to emails and phone calls, you're looking for an employee, not a consultant. If you're looking for someone who can drop everything for you, please hire an employee, not a consultant. If you're hiring someone for their expertise just to tell them they're wrong, at least be sure that person is on your payroll - and not a consultant. The legal difference is that consultants are allowed to choose where they work, when they work, and the manner in which that work is completed. *And if you're engaging in any of the above, you should also just not hire anyone and reevaluate your life if that's how you treat people 😜 P.S. Consultants - what else goes on this list? #Consulting #Hiring #fractional #Consultant
