This past summer, Dr. Charlie Hall delivered a critical message to the horticulture industry at AmericanHort's Cultivate'24: hold steady and avoid reactionary moves in response to recent market dips. While 2023-2024 data shows mixed short-term performance, long-term growth trends remain robust. 📈 For commercial growers, understanding and adapting to regional variations, input cost pressures, and big-box retail dynamics are essential. But there’s more we can do. Leveraging Growmentum’s centralized task management, labor optimization, and forecasting tools, growers can actively streamline operations and maintain strong margins—especially when challenges arise. 🌟 Growmentum helps growers tackle their largest operational costs—labor—by reducing redundancy, improving task efficiency, and optimizing workforce planning. This means more time and resources focused on what matters most: building sustainable growth in an evolving market. 💡 As Dr. Hall suggests, it’s about a “strategic mindset change.” Platforms like Growmentum enable growers to make proactive, data-driven decisions to hold the line and thrive. Let’s grow smarter, together. 💪 Check out the full article originally published in Greenhouse Management magazine for more insights! 🍃 https://lnkd.in/gDyNmHDW

Tune into Carlo Magni and Kate James shedding light on how we leverage consumer research over decades-long innovation pathways to develop remarkable, branded novel fruit cultivars to win in export markets. 1 - IDENTIFYING OPPORTUNITIES Leveraging deep-dive qual and quant to understand the market in depth, and what traits and characteristics a variety must have to succeed. Exploring current expectations of the fruit, consumer needs and drivers of choice, current tensions with existing fruit - to inform breeding decision making for new varieties 2 - FOCUSED INNOVATION Using quantitative consumer sensory research to select the best varieties within a clear set of KPIs, to find a cultivar that can deliver a truly 'better' and differentiated consumer experience. Understanding in detail the sensory 'profile' of each variety and the core attributes and benefits of the fruit, to inform brand proposition and positioning. 3 - REMARKABLE BRANDS This is often the step that is missed or executed poorly, undermining the years of work put into developing a remarkable fruit. A truly remarkable produce brand has a clear value proposition and positioning informed by the experience of the fruit and aligned with consumer needs and occasions it meets, supporting people to understand it and emotively connect with it, and navigate towards experiences they value. Strong brands create preferential demand and value capture for the cultivars we have worked hard over decades to create. We're super passionate about cultivar innovation and brand development in produce, and deeply understand what is required to do this well (and how hard it can be to get it right!). Reach out if this has resonated, or sparked your curiosity! Louise Beard Niamh Patterson Denise Hunter Mark Chow

I'm excited to share that Agritask is partnering with Walmart in a pioneering pilot program to revolutionize the sourcing of seasonal crops through our advanced Yield Intelligence solution. Using our remote sensing and data analytics tools, we will provide real-time, hyperlocal insights on blackberry and cherry crops from select Walmart suppliers in various regions of the U.S. and Mexico. These insights are crucial, given the high sensitivity of these crops to temperature fluctuations and moisture levels, which can significantly impact their growth, quality, transport, and shelf life. Our technology will deliver immediate alerts on emerging risks, allowing Walmart to swiftly adjust their procurement strategies. By assessing real-time changes in harvest timing, we enable Walmart to proactively manage inventory levels and explore alternative sourcing options. Additionally, our updated indications on meeting yield targets throughout the growing season will empower Walmart to optimize their supply chain logistics and ensure sufficient product availability for customers. Dealing with challenges in purchasing and planning accuracy in agriculture due to data discrepancies and environmental uncertainties is challenging. Agritask’s technology has the potential to fill vital information gaps that sourcing managers often face when predicting yield, transforming how agricultural supply chains are managed. https://lnkd.in/dSetGkDX produce-sourcing-decisions/ Ofir Ardon #cropsupply #climatesmart #climatechange #sourcing #yieldintelligence

Inspired by John Foraker's memorable keynote address at #organicweek2024 just a week ago and just for fun, I ran some #organic sector projections. A couple are worth pondering further. Given sales of $8.4B in 2002, $30.4B in 2012, and $67.5B in 2022, we have a CAGR of 11% over those 20 years, which John aptly described as staggering. If that rate remains constant, we will: 1. break the $100B mark in 2026, 2. hit $150B in 2030, 3. arrive at $191B in 2032, and 4. be well over the $500B mark in 2042, all of which are staggering indeed. As stoked as I'd be were it to end up being true, and as John noted in his talk, my gut says 11% is not realistic for the next ten years, let alone the next twenty years, so I cut the CAGR in half to a 5.5%, which feels and sounds more likely to me. You could pick any percentage, but I chose this one. At a 5.5% CAGR, we will: 1. cross the $100B mark in 2030, and 2. arrive in the neighborhood of $200B in 2042. My eye is on these figures and what we all could be doing to help get them there or beyond, and we are doing our level best at Wolf & Associates, Inc. to do what we can. Those of you who know me know I'm not a huge fan of forecasting for forecasting's sake; I think a lot of it drives unnecessary teeth-gnashing and counterproductive speculation. The value in doing so here for me is rather for asking questions like, what does the industry look like when we hit $100B? $200B? Who wants to participate for the first time when these threshold numbers start appearing? How will we produce the kind of crop volume required...and who is 'we' at that point? How do we get that many more acres in organic production? What kind of handling & processing capacity is needed to provide for these numbers to be true? These are some of the questions on my mind, and I find them endlessly inspiring. What's clear to me is that we - as a community and industry - need to embrace #innovation in all things related to the sector...inputs, ingredients, products, packaging, business structures, relationships, supply chain conventions, contracts, forecasting, consumer education, and more to even get close to reaching our potential. Thanks again, John Foraker, for kickstarting this line of thinking for me. No matter where we are at the time they occur, I hope we all stop to celebrate the distance we will have come no matter what metrics count for each of us. Cheers. Good food for thought from John Foster, John Foraker and Organic Trade Association's #organicweek2024. A little over 2 decades since USDA first finalized the rule for the federal organic standard, organic agriculture is already transforming how we grow our food and how we eat. Imagine where we will be in another 2 decades - and the benefits that creates for human health (especially farmworkers) and the environment!
Organic instigator. Builder of sustainable & sustaining enterprises. Solver of complex problems. Lover of abstract art, family, friends & pie - not necessarily in that order
