Here's the quickest way to start identifying reading needs for you adolescent readers - and it takes zero minutes of class time 🤯. 👉 Use students' prior state assessment tier levels as your initial, overall screener. 📊 - Proficient/Meets Standard and above? Don't screen. - Falls Far Below Standard? Go straight to phonics and decoding screeners - Approaching/Partially Meets Standard? Move up to fluency and comprehension screeners, sentence clause knowledge, morphology Yes, we know. State assessments don’t measure the foundational components of reading in any way. But those tiers correlate well with the areas where students are likely to struggle. Junior high & high school classes are bigger, and can be harder to manage. So we want to remove as many steps as possible to get to our data and start targeting deficits. #educationalleadership #educationpolicy #educationreform #education #teachers

Should every teacher be a "literacy teacher" to help our secondary students succeed? I would say yes. We know that part of the learning process is students being able to transfer their learning to different situations. And with reading, that can mean being able to take the multisyllabic word attack routine and the questioning strategy they learned in ELA class and use it with their social studies, science, and math texts. It's possible that this transfer will happen organically, but it would be much faster and more effective if those content area teachers also knew about these literacy strategies and were able to reinforce them with students. Imagine a social studies teacher dividing the word "revolution" into syllables, or a science teacher talking about the morphemes in "microscope." A recent article in The Hechinger Report has a few real-life examples, along with some commentary about the lack of teacher training in this area.

Mathematics is a fundamental part of human thought and logic, and integral to attempts at understanding the world and ourselves. Mathematics provides an effective way of building mental discipline and encourages logical reasoning and mental rigor.

‘What’s the use of being good in maths if you grow up to be a lousy person?’ said a Class 1 teacher to me.’ ‘So you’d like to have a value education programme in your class?’ I asked. ‘No, no, education IS about growing up to be a caring person who has a sense of what is right and wrong.’ ‘Meaning…?’ ‘Meaning that in my class I do not focus only on literacy, numeracy, textbooks, etc. but also how children relate with each other and me, and their families and others in their area.’ ‘Interesting. I didn’t even know that is possible. How do you do this?’ ‘Not that difficult.’ He went on to explain his approach. I tried to distil these and the following emerged. - Make class rules with children and stick to them. - Encourage children to succeed in a group rather than individually. - Now and then, ask each child to find out and share how their friend is feeling. - Discuss what they would do if they were characters in a story, justify their choices, even debate which would be better and why. - Ask them about the most interesting thing they’ve seen on their way to or from school. What else would you add? Is this practical? Worthwhile? Or just some sort of idealistic confusion?

Education System Alert: A Call for Change As a dedicated math teacher, it's deeply disappointing to see students struggling with basic concepts. Education should be more than just memorizing facts and passing exams—it's about truly understanding the material and applying it in real-life scenarios. Seeing college students unable to solve fundamental math problems is a wake-up call for us all. We need to shift our focus from rote learning to conceptual understanding. What changes do you think are necessary in our education system to address this issue? Who do you believe is responsible for this gap? Let's spark a conversation and work together to improve our education system! #EducationReform #TeachingMath #ConceptualLearning #EducationMatters #MathEducation #StudentSuccess #EducationalExcellence #FutureOfEducation
